Swerve Strickland is set to face a former WWE Superstar for his maiden title defense at a major PPV event. On the 26th of May 2024, Strickland is set to face his former tag mate on AEW Double or Nothing. The announcement was made at the start of the latest episode of AEW Dynamite after several discussions from the EVPs of the company.

It looks like the Young Bucks already have their influence on bookings after Jack Perry joined the faction of the Elite. Behind the scenes, they were responsible for deciding the new opponent for the AEW World Champion. After beating Samoa Joe for the world title at AEW Dynasty, Strickland has been on a brilliant run. He has been a workhorse having defended his title twice.

In the last week, Strickland beat Claudio Castagnoli to remain the champion. In the night after the Dynasty, Swerve managed to defend his title against Kyle Fletcher. The latest challenger for the world title is none other than Christian Cage. In the latest episode of the Dynamite, Christian came to the arena and cut a promo explaining the fans why he is behind his former tag mate.

Complicated history between former tag mates

It is worth noting that Christian and Swerve have a history with each other. Stickland was earlier a heel in AEW before becoming the face. Back then, Cage was a face. In one of their segments in the feud, Swerve had attacked the gym protege of Cage, Nick Wayne, in his own gymnasium. Likewise, Strickland had cost one of the tag matches for Cage by taking the pin.

During the latest promo on Dynamite, Christian reminded the fans of these instances. It seems like the rivalry has an actual reason for the eventual payoff. In the days to come, it might grow to be a good one. Before joining AEW, Christian was an accomplished wrestler in WWE. He was popularly a tag partner with Edge who is currently in AEW with his original name, Adam Copeland.
