Prithvi Shaw had one of the most promising starts to his international cricket career in 2018. He was all set to represent India in the Tests against Australia however, a last-minute injury ruled him out of the tour. He returned for Delhi Capitals and played consistently in IPL 2019 but soon he was suspended for consuming a banned substance.
The right-handed batsman returned from suspension in the second half of 2019 and piled up a mountain of runs for Mumbai. He was on the verge of returning to Team India but the luck did not favour him as he picked up a shoulder injury against Karnataka. BCCI has asked him to report to the NCA and the seriousness of the injury is unknown.
In case he does not make it to IPL 2020, here are the 3 players Delhi could sign as his replacement:
1. Kedar Devdhar
As Delhi Capitals have stacked up their overseas slots, the team management will have to hunt for an Indian talent from the unsold players’ list. One of the many unlucky domestic stars who missed out on a contract during IPL Auction 2020 was Kedar Devdhar.
The Baroda-based batsman had impressed everyone with his batting skills in the 2019-20 edition of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Devdhar played 10 games for Baroda where he scored 356 runs at an average of 39.55. He had a strike rate of 133.33 while he registered three fifties.
The 30-year-old has been playing consistently for his team in the domestic circuit. The right-handed batsman also has a T20 hundred to his name. Thus, Delhi Capitals could consider him as an apt replacement for Prithvi Shaw in IPL 2020.
2. Harpreet Singh
The Madhya Pradesh-born big-hitting batsman, Harpreet Singh was the brightest spot of Chattisgarh’s campaign in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20. Singh represented Chattisgarh in 7 matches where he amassed 329 runs at a blistering strike rate of 146.22.
The left-handed batsman has been a part of two IPL franchises in the past namely Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors. However, the team management of those two teams could not utilize his talent to the maximum potential.
The Delhi-based IPL franchise has a history of unearthing new talents hence, they could sign the 28-year-old batsman who has been playing T20 cricket since 2010. Singh was also a part of the Indian U-19 team during the early days of his career.
3. Chaitanya Bishnoi
Former Chennai Super Kings player, Chaitanya Bishnoi was surprisingly released by the yellow army although he did not do anything wrong last year. Bishnoi has an incredible amount of talent and, he can be a valuable asset for any franchise in IPL.
The reason why Bishnoi would be the best replacement for Prithvi Shaw is that the 25-year-old hails from Delhi and has represented his state at the U-16 and U-19 level. So, he would have a clear idea about the wicket of the Feroz Shah Kotla.
Besides, he had played an integral role in Haryana’s success at the Syed Mushtaq T20 Trophy 2019-20. The left-handed batsman scored 280 runs off 12 matches for his team and even registered two fifties. Thus, he could be a fantastic addition to Delhi Capitals’ squad.
