A plethora of household names will be up for grabs in the mini-auction for the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). One name that stands out among the lot is of Australia’s pace sensation Mitchell Starc. It is a popular belief that a number of franchises will go behind the speed merchant and he can become the most expensive buy in the history of the league.
However, it all depends on whether Mitchell Starc makes himself available for the Indian league or not. The Australian speedster hasn’t played in the IPL since 2015 after he made his debut for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2014. In 2018, he was picked to play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but was ruled out due to an injury.
Starc had then made himself unavailable for IPL 2020 to prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, which was postponed to October 2021 in India owing to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, despite not playing IPL for many seasons, the pacer has made a case for himself in IPL 2021 with his exemplary performance in the limited-overs for Australia National team.
3 Teams that can bid for Mitchell Starc in IPL 2021 Auction
1. Royal Challengers Bangalore
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) boasts of having legends like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Yuzvendra Chahal in their squad yet they have failed to win their maiden IPL trophy. One of the main reasons behind this is their death bowling. There have been many occasions when despite putting up massive totals of 200+ on the board, Bangalore lost the game as the bowlers failed to defend the target.
In addition, ahead of IPL 2021, the Bangalore outfit released their pacers including Chris Morris and Umesh Yadav while Dale Steyn had made himself unavailable for this season. This leaves Virat Kohli with just three main pacers Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini and Kane Richardson.
Thus, the management will be hoping to rope Mitchell Starc in the squad to fill the holes in their ship and complete their dream of lifting their maiden IPL trophy. Also, Starc has a long association with RCB as he had made his IPL debut sporting Red and Gold jersey only.
2. Mumbai Indians
Defending Champions Mumbai Indians boasts of having a most competent squad among all the eight franchises. However, one area where they would like to improve upon is their death bowling. While they have their two main pacers in the form of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult, Mumbai will be hoping to include Mitchell Starc as their third pacer.
MI decided to let go off their three pace sensations Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Pattinson and Lasith Malinga. While the former two players were released owing to their unimpressive performance in IPL 2021, Sri Lanka’s veteran Lasith Malinga has taken retirement from franchise cricket.
Thus, it is speculated that Mumbai will bid a staggering amount to buy the Australian pacer as this is the only limitation in their winning combination.
3. Rajasthan Royals
The previous season Rajasthan Royals had finished at eighth position in the points table. While Jofra Archer was at his fluent best with the ball, he didn’t get the support from his partners to stop the flow of the runs and take wickets at regular intervals. As a result, Rajasthan leaked a lot of runs in the death overs and failed to defend the totals posted by their batsmen.
Meanwhile, Royals played a big gamble ahead of IPL 2021 by releasing their captain Steve Smith and making local boy Sanju Samson the new skipper of the team. Excluding Smith from the team leaves Rajasthan with one empty overseas slots as the other three are occupied by Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer.
Mitchell Starc was in terrific form in the just-concluded India tour of Australia and can repeat his heroics on the Indian pitches as well. In addition, no one other than Starc can be better to assist Archer in handling the pace department.
