Glenn Maxwell is one of those players who makes things happen. There is always a sense of excitement when Maxwell walks out to bat. He has the ability to change the complexion of the game in the space of a few deliveries. Hence, it is no surprise why he is rated so highly.
Maxwell made his IPL debut for Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2012 but played only two games. It was in 2013 when Mumbai Indians (MI) scalped the Victorian all-rounder for a whopping sum of $1 million. However, he was warming the bench again as he featured in just three games.
It was 2014 when he switched to Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Maxwell was unleashed. Batting at No. 3, the ‘Big Show’ amassed 552 runs and had a strike-rate of 187.50. His phenomenal form helped KXIP reach the final that year. However, after that season, he has failed to replicate is heroics.
He flattered to deceive the next few years and he was eventually released by KXIP. In 2018, Delhi grabbed him for a huge sum of INR 9 crores. However, he failed in that season as well. Just before the 2019 auctions, Maxwell pulled out of the 12th season to play County cricket in a bid to revive his Test career and prepare for the World Cup.
Maxwell will be back this time around in IPL 2020 Auction and maybe one of the biggest attractions. Thus, here we look at three teams who should go for the Aussie all-rounder in the upcoming IPL 2020 Auction.
1. Rajasthan Royals (RR)
Rajasthan Royals have blown hot and cold quite a bit since their return in 2018. They sneaked through to the playoffs in 2018 while they just about managed to avoid the wooden spoon in 2019. Hence, one of the main reasons to this has been their failure with the bat.
RR have a lot of top-order batsmen in their squad. The likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, Rahul Tripathi and Steve Smith – all love batting in the top three. Moreover, you cannot have Ben Stokes batting lower than 4 or 5. Hence, RR have a crowded top-order with multiple players competing for spots.
They lack a finisher or even a floater who can change the momentum of the game within a few deliveries. Thus, Glenn Maxwell could fit in pretty well and RR might bid for him in IPL 2020 Auction. He can be the finisher RR are looking for. Moreover, Maxwell can also chip in with a few overs of useful off-spin.
2. Kings XI Punjab (KXIP)
As soon as you see Kings XI Punjab’s (KXIP) name, you’d imagine why would they want to go back to Glenn Maxwell after releasing him in 2018. But KXIP don’t really have a lot of middle-order batsmen in their ranks. They often seem to fall off the cliff after their star-studded top order which comprises of Chris Gayle, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal.
David Miller has flattered to deceive and has been a big disappointment. Karun Nair is no more the same batsman and has struggled. With Mandeep Singh and Sarfraz Khan haven’t been consistent either. Hence, for the last two seasons, KXIP have often started well in the season but have fallen away towards the end of the season.
It’s been the same with the bat. If the top order fails, they don’t have enough back-up in the middle. Moreover, Ravichandran Ashwin bats at No. 7 which seems a touch higher in T20 cricket. Hence, Maxwell will add depth to the side and will add teeth to the wobbly middle order.
3. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) may have a decent depth as far as middle-order batsmen are concerned. The likes of Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell form the heart of the middle order. They also have the likes of Carlos Braithwaite and Joe Denly in the mix.
Hence, the question may well come that where does Glenn Maxwell fit in this? With Karthik and Russell being the finishers, Maxwell could well be used as a floater. In fact, they could use him at No. 3 as well with Rana, Russell and Karthik to follow which makes the batting wear a formidable look. The Aussie all-rounder may well relish in that role. In fact, that was where he found all his success at KXIP in 2014.
Moreover, Russell’s injury history isn’t great either. He has often tended to break down. Thus, Maxwell’s addition could ease both Russell and KKR of the need to bank on Russell all the time. Thus, Maxwell could be a valuable addition to this KKR side.
