At the moment the cricketing fraternity is shocked with the loss of star all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan for failing to follow the corruption protocols of ICC. It also shows that the game has been plagued by illegal activities. Most importantly the cases of spot-fixing are increasing rapidly even after taking necessary steps to avoid such instances.
Especially since the dawn of this century, the gentlemen’s game has lost some of its charm due to repeated spot-fixing offences. Even the Indian cricket team has faced the untoward situation due to the involvement of some of their star players in such activities. Among them, there are certain active cricketers from India who were alleged of match-fixing but the fans never came to know about these incidents.
Here is the list of 5 instances when active Indian cricketers were accused of spot-fixing you don’t know:
1) Mohammed Shami
With 61 wickets in the 2019 calendar year, the Indian fast-bowling gem, Mohammed Shami is enjoying a dream run in the international circuit. It seems that the speedster is on top of his game irrespective of the format he is playing in. What’s more interesting is that currently, Shami is an integral part of the famed Indian pace attack which is running riot on the opposition.
From his initial days, Shami has left the cricketing fraternity in awe with his pace and wicket-taking abilities. However, a couple of years ago he lost his place in the side owing to his inconsistency and fitness issues. At the time Shami was also going through a rough patch in his personal life. His wife, Hasin Jahan levelled various charges against him including spot-fixing.
According to her, Shami received money from a British based businessman, Mohammad Bhai for fixing matches. She also added that a Pakistan model Alisbha is involved with them. Immediately, the BCCI withheld Shami’s annual contract and started investigating the matter after Jahan handed over some important documents to prove her claims.
After multiple interrogations and a detailed probe of his recorded conversations, he was cleared of all charges. Eventually, the Bengal cricketer proved his loyalty to the gentlemen’s game.
2) Suresh Raina & Ravindra Jadeja
Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja may not be a run-machine like Virat Kohli but they are match-winners in their own right. Both the stars have bailed out the Blue team on numerous occasions. They have regularly shouldered the responsibilities of the Indian team with their all-round skillset. Over the years, their athleticism has helped the team form one of the formidable fielding units in their cricketing history.
Both of them have been efficient servants of Indian cricket. Along with their international record, their IPL contributions also prove the point. Having said that their integrity to the country’s cricket was in question when Lalit Modi accused them of spot-fixing. The former Chairman of the Indian Premier League sent the cricketing world into a frenzy by dropping a confidential email to the ICC.
As per Modi, three reputed cricketers from the CSK camp were involved in the IPL fixing saga. His email included the names of Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo. In that, he revealed that these players took bribes from a real estate tycoon cum bookie named, Baba Diwan.
He further added that they also accepted favours in the form of personal assets. Therefore, the BCCI took the help of ACSU to verify the claims. In the end, their report didn’t contain any evidence against them and it turned out to be a false allegation.
3) MS Dhoni
There are few cricketers who can match the popularity of MS Dhoni in world cricket. The former Indian captain is termed one of the greatest leaders to have played the game. Not only he has scored more than 17000 international runs but he has also led the country in over 300 games. On top of that, the Men in Blue have won three ICC championships in three different events under his reign which makes him the only cricketer to achieve this feat.
For all his efforts his legacy will live on forever in the cricketing history. Especially his finishing skills are part of cricket folklore but it also contains some dark chapters of his career. The most notable one being his involvement in the 2013 IPL fixing scandal. Very few people know that when CSK was accused of spot-fixing, fingers were also pointed at MS Dhoni. At first, he avoided questions regarding the fiasco but it further attracted suspicions towards him.
Then in 2017, a report started doing the rounds which included captain cool’s name as one of the perpetrators of the 2013 fixing turmoil. Some shocking revelations came to the light such as Dhoni’s relationship with the bookies with Uttamlal Jain and Vikram Agarwal.
Moreover, it also contained their plan to fix the tie between RR and CSK scheduled on 12/05/2013. Still, the BCCI blamed the Supreme court for not revealing the names in the report submitted by Mudgal Committee at the right time. As a result, no further action was taken in the case and now it will forever remain a mystery.
4) Stuart Binny
Though Stuart Binny is not a popular name in the international circuit he has always been a consistent performer in the Indian domestic arena. With his multi-dimensional skillset, he has also played a handful of games for the Men in Blue. Besides he has also recorded the best bowling figures by an Indian in an ODI game. He scalped 6 wickets in his spell against Bangladesh by conceding mere 4 runs.
Especially the Karnataka cricketer is considered a valuable commodity in the shorter formats because of his all-round game. That’s why he has been a regular member of the IPL bandwagon and has been part of the Rajasthan franchise in 7 seasons. Donning the RR jersey his most successful campaign came in 2013 but it is mostly remembered for his connections with the IPL fixing saga.
In late 2014 when the Supreme Court of India disclosed some of the names from the Mudgal Committee report it included Binny’s name. At the time the all-rounder was part of the national set-up. Immediately the BCCI stated that they will look into the matter.
Thereafter further details emerged that his name came up as a passing remark in several interrogations. However, no evidence of his wrongdoing was found out and that’s why he was not questioned by the panel. In the end, Stuart got the clean chit from the BCCI which put the whole matter to rest.
5) Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are two of the cricketing geniuses of this era. Currently, both the players have been setting new records with their batting prowess. They have also led the Blue team on several occasions. All in all, they have successfully become two of the biggest superstars of Indian cricket and their record speaks for themselves.
In the last two years, both of them have been hogging the limelight for their match-winning performances. However, the situation was quite different when the team was battling it out in an ODI series against West Indies in 2018. Though Kohli and Rohit were piling on centuries they headlined the newspapers for wrong reasons. Their names got associated with the ugly term, spot-fixing.
Yes, it is true as the Al Jazeera documentary unveiled some shocking truths. According to the hour-long video many international games have been fixed in this decade. Besides it also contained photos of many high-profile cricketers with alleged match-fixer, Aneel Munawar.
Among them, his photos with two senior players of the Indian team, Virat and Rohit created a huge uproar in the media. Straight away rumours started doing the rounds that they are involved in some sort of illegal activities. Without much evidence, two high-rated players were accused of spot-fixing which later proved to be baseless allegations.
