The Indian Premier League – IPL has never failed to throw up surprises in its decade long journey. On the top of that list has to be the winning campaign of Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural edition. Apart from their two-year ban, the franchise has been a regular feature in the tournament. Like their name suggests the Royals have usually entertained the audience with their brand of cricket.
The Pink team has always punched above their weight and that’s why they are one of the popular teams in the IPL. However, in the last two seasons, the team has fallen off considerably even after having some of the best exponents of world-cricket. The biggest letdown has been their pace department. Apart from Jofra Archer, nobody has stood up for the team and that’s why the franchise should look for more options in the upcoming auctions.
Here is the list of 5 pace bowlers Rajasthan Royals should pick in IPL 2020 auction
1) Tanveer Ul-Haq
The Indian Premier League is known for its nurturing of homegrown talent and that’s why the Rajasthan team should not look far for solving their bowling problems. One of the names the franchise will find in the list of their local scouts is Tanveer-Ul Haq. The left-arm pacer was one of the heroes when the state team enjoyed a dream-run in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy.
He scalped 51 wickets in 10 games. His spells set-up their memorable campaign as the team finished at top of the points table at the end of group stages. The speedster has the pace to trouble quality batting line-ups and can generate movement even on good tracks. Though Tanveer hasn’t played much white-ball cricket he certainly has the skill set to succeed in this format.
He can be a great addition to the Pink team in IPL as he can wreak havoc by partnering with Jofra Archer and Oshane Thomas. The Royals have struggled to pick up wickets at front and Tanveer can be the perfect solution for their problems. His inclusion will also change the dynamics of their bowling group.
2) Chris Jordan
Chris Jordan is one of the most underrated T20 stars in world cricket. The Barbadian has all the necessary ingredients to become a regular in the England set-up. Unfortunately, the speedster has never been provided with enough opportunities to prove his mettle in the Three Lions camp.
That’s why he has always tried to make his point by playing as many T20 games around the globe. In that case, the Rajasthan team should keep a close eye on him in the IPL 2020 auctions. His versatile bowling will augur well for the franchise. Till now he has played 163 T20 games in which he has fished 171 wickets.
Moreover, his economy rate of 8.4 while mostly bowling at the back end of the innings is commendable. He is considered a death over specialist in recent years, an area that has dragged down the Pink team in the last couple of seasons. Jordan’s batting will be a bonus for the team. On top of that he can also team up with his Sussex teammate Jofra Archer and they can form a deadly combo.
3) Tushar Deshpande
At the moment Rajasthan Royals doesn’t have an Indian pace option to back-up Jofra Archer’s vigor. The likes of Dhawal Kulkarni and Jaydev Unadkat have not been at their best in the Pink jersey. So the franchise should provide a faithful ally to Archer in the pace department. Who better than Tushar Deshpande as he has been taking the right steps in the domestic circuit.
The Mumbai cricketer was one of the highest wicket-takers in the 2019 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He picked up 19 wickets in 10 games at an economy rate of 7.81. Deshpande also topped the bowling charts in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy as he bagged 15 wickets in 8 games. The speedster likes to unsettle the batsmen with his pace and it is a quality associated with a wicket-taking bowler.
On the true surfaces of Sawai Mansingh Stadium, he will be able to let off his steam and it will pay rich dividends for the franchise. Both Archer and Tushar are attacking options and the duo can run riot on the opposition batsmen. In layman terms, his presence will multiply Rajasthan’s bowling prowess.
4) Sheldon Cottrell
It’s a no brainer that Jofra Archer will be the spearhead of the Rajasthan’s bowling attack in the 2020 IPL. However, his availability for the complete season is the primary question as his international commitments might hamper the Pink team’s plans. So the franchise should consider including another top-rated pace bowler to their set-up.
The wisest option will be Sheldon Cottrell as he has been enjoying a good run in the international circuit. He was the only positive from the Caribbean land from their dull World Cup campaign earlier in the year. The left-arm pacer ended up as the leading wicket-taker for his country in the ICC event with 12 wickets in 9 games. Also in the recently concluded CPL, he continued his good form by bagging 12 wickets in 8 ties.
Cottrell can ruffle any batting group with his pace and bounce. Moreover, he has also got the ability to stun the opposition with his aggressive approach. He can be a lethal weapon on the surfaces of Jaipur which aids pace bowlers. Besides his athleticism on the field will be another boon for the Royals camp as the team dropped a handful of catches in their last sojourn.
5) Tom Curran
The Rajasthan franchise has spent a fortune for the services of Jaydev Unadkat and the results have not been favorable. So its high time that they should invest in other options and their best bet will be Tom Curran. The Englishman has been going through a purple patch and it was evident from his recent efforts in the T20 blast where he scalped 17 wickets in 10 games.
Before that, he also remained in the top draw in the 8th edition of the BBL as he fished 20 wickets for Sydney Thunder. The 24-year old is rapidly rising through the ranks and he has already played close to 100 games in various T20 leagues. The right-arm pacer burst into the scene with his ability to generate pace and swing.
However, Tom has slowly become a well-rounded bowler. Especially nowadays he has become a death over specialist in the limited-overs format. His slow ball variations and yorkers have floored many batsmen around the world. Curran has the temperament to deliver in crunch situations and that’s why the Royals should include him in their squad.
