The 2021 IPL retention ceremony has already taken place, and franchises have made some bold moves to release the big names out of their pool. The IPL 2021 mini auctions are likely to get on tables in February 2021, and preparations for the same have already kicked off. The retention ceremony took place on January 20, and teams came up with their desired lists to endure a great season ahead.
The MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings endured a terrible IPL 2020 season in UAE, where they failed to seal the playoffs berth for the first time in their IPL history. They finished seventh on the points table, and the skipper made clear that they would be bouncing back with full preparation and great squad planning to shine in the next season.
As CSK has come up with its list of retained and released players, they will be moving up with a purse of INR 22.9 Cr ahead. They still have one overseas spot vacant, and it will be a thing to see who they will pick up to make the best possible combination.
5 Players CSK can target to fill their overseas player slot in IPL 2021 Auction
1. Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell had a horrendous IPL 2020 season where he failed to perform his all-round duties with KXIP. The management kept backing him due to his seniority, experience, and past performance, but the Australian couldn’t deliver in a single match.
In 13 matches, he had just 108 runs in his account at a dismal average of 15.42 and scalped three wickets in total. However, when he went back in Australian colours, he just seemed unstoppable. He was seen at his very best in Australia’s limited over matches against India.
He collected some terrific fifties in his bag and pushed his team over the line. Keeping all this in mind, the all-rounder can return to his usual best any day. As he is already out of the KXIP squad, CSK might show interest in picking him up soon.
2. Steve Smith
The IPL 2020 didn’t go lucky for ace batsman Steve Smith who failed to perform his duties, both as batsman and skipper. In a rare instance, a skipper is released out of the pool outright, but so is the case with Smith right now. He has been released out of the RR squad, and Sanju Samson has been declared as their new leader.
Smith started the IPL 2020 season with a couple of fifties but lost his rhythm as the tournament progressed. RR finished at last in the points table in IPL 2020. However, when the classy batsman landed on his home soil, he was seen in his usual rhythm as he scored back-to-back tons against India.
In line with all his records and his experience at the international level, Chennai might show interest in him. A brilliant batter like him can be a great deal for any franchise on any given day and will add to CSK’s value if they pick him.
3. Chris Morris
RCB is one team in IPL which believes in too much experimenting and shuffling with their squads. Even this time around, they released 10-players out of their squad, and all-rounder Chris Morris was one of them. He didn’t have a great IPL season either with bat or ball.
He scalped 11 wickets and scored 34 runs in total in the matches he got with RCB. Since he has been released out of the RCB pool, CSK might like to trade him in their squad owing to his hitting capabilities towards the end.
The tall Proteas all-rounder can bowl during any stage of the game and is well known for his clean striking prowess. In addition, he is a great fielder, which can add to any team’s value. CSK have a reasonable amount in their purse in case they decide to pick Morris up.
4. Mitchell Starc
Starc is considered one of the most dangerous pacers in the cricket world at current times. Though he hasn’t played IPL in the last few years, his demands may be too high in the upcoming IPL 2021 auctions. Starc last played with RCB and might be seen in the upcoming edition.
In the latest turn of events, cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has stated that Starc is going to be the most expensive buy of IPL ever. He stated that it might be an early call, but Starc can turn tables in February mini-auction owing to his immense fast bowling skills.
Starc was not at his usual best form in the recently concluded series against India, but CSK need one impact pacer for their death overs. Pitching in for Starc will allow them to have a great combination with Deepak Chahar, and he might turn too lucky for the team.
5. Dawid Malan
The ICC no1 T20I batsman in the world will be the franchise’s first choice in the upcoming IPL 2021 auctions despite having not played IPL ever. The T20 specialist has never been part of IPL but has plied his trade in numerous T20 leagues around the world.
He came into the international limelight in 2017 June after he got named in England’s T20I squad against South Africa. Not only he marked his debut with the match but was declared man of the match for his batting master class.
For now, the English batsman has been part of 19 T20Is with 855 runs in his bag at a stunning average of 53.43. He can definitely be a great asset to CSK lot if they decide to pick him up in the auction. CSK might even need to loosen their purse a bit to get in touch with such a brilliant batter.
