Test cricket is a format that tests the technique of a batsman at the utmost level and is often used as a parameter to judge the potential of a player. In modern times, there are many batsmen who have performed consistently in the longest format of the game. There have been debates on whether the conditions have become favourable for scoring but that can not be used to take the credit away from top skills displayed by batsmen in the current time.
In this article, we are going to list out 5 batsmen who can break the record of the fastest 10,000 runs in Test cricket. This record is jointly held by Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara. Both of them had completed their ten thousand runs in 195 innings.
Lara first achieved this milestone in the year 2004 in a match against England. Later on, Sachin achieved this feat in the year 2005 while playing against Pakistan.
Let’s look at 5 players who can surpass Lara and Tendulkar’s record in Test cricket:
1. Babar Azam
Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam has been performing brilliantly in the Test format for the last 2-3 years. He is currently number 6 in the ICC Test ranking for batsmen. He has aggregated 2167 runs in 37 matches at an average of 44.22.
Babar has hit 5 centuries and 16 half-centuries till now in Test cricket. His high score of 143 runs came against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi Test, 2020.
Since 2019, Babar Azam has scored over 1000 runs in Test cricket at an average near 60. His four tons out of five in his career have come in the last two years only.
2. Marnus Labuschagne
Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne has been in stellar form since his comeback in Test cricket. He was included in Australia playing XI in Ashes Test as a concussion substitute for Steve Smith and scored a half-century in that match. He continued with his brilliant performances in that Ashes series.
In his Test career so far, Labuschagne has aggregated 1885 runs at an average of 60.80. He has hit five tons and 10 fifties in his career so far. This includes a high score of 215 against New Zealand in 2020.
Currently, Labuschagne is ranked number 3 in the ICC Test rankings for batsmen. He has scored the most runs in the World Test Championship and has also hit most hundreds in the tournament.
3. Virat Kohli
Indian captain Virat Kohli is considered a modern-day great. He has shown his class in all three formats of the game. In the Test format, Virat has scored 7463 runs in 89 matches he has played at an average of 52.92. This included 27 hundreds as well.
Virat is currently number 5 in ICC Test batsmen ranking, however, he has been in top-3 positions for most times of his career in the last 3-4 years. Virat needs to score 2537 runs in 43 innings to surpass Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar in terms of scoring the fastest 10,000 runs.
Virat has an even better batting record while captaining the Indian team in Test cricket. Virat has scored 5,365 Test runs as captain at a superb average of 59.61. This also includes 7 double centuries with a high score of 254 not out.
4. Kane Williamson
Kiwi captain Kane Williamson is currently the number 1 ranked batsman in ICC Test rankings. He has amassed 7115 runs in his Test career at an average of 54.31. It includes 24 centuries and 32 half-centuries.
Williamson has played 144 innings in his Test career so far. To go past Lara and Tendulkar, Williamson needs to score 2,885 runs in 50 innings.
He has hit four double tons in the format, with a high score of 251 against the West Indies that came in 2020. If Williamson continues his great form, he may be in contention to break the record.
5. Steve Smith
Steve Smith is regarded as the best batsman of Test format in current times. He has scored 7,540 runs in 77 matches so far at an average of 61.80. This includes 27 centuries and 31 half-centuries.
Steve Smith needs to score 2,460 runs in 55 innings to claim the record for scoring the fastest 10,000 runs in the Test format. In 2019, Smith had surpassed Wally Hammond in terms of scoring the fastest 7,000 runs in the longest format.
Smith was chosen as the ICC Test batsmen of the decade at the start of the year 2021. Given his credentials as a Test player, it may well be possible that Smith is successful in breaking Sachin’s and Lara’s record.
