New Zealand, unfortunately, came second in the humdinger of the World Cup final played at Lord’s against England on July 14. The Kiwis were rather unlucky on the day as they didn’t deserve to lose but the hosts went on to lift the trophy courtesy some absurd rules. Their skipper Kane Williamson was praised by many for handling the moments gracefully but even he was hurt after giving it all throughout the tournament to eventually fall short due to bad luck.
Williamson won the Man of the Tournament for scoring 578 runs in only nine innings at an impeccable average of 82.57. But he would’ve easily swapped it with the World Cup trophy in his hand on any day. He was disappointed as well and went on to term later that the final seemed like a bad dream for him.
“I sort of explained it to a few people, it’s like sort of hits you in waves. You feel like, 10 minutes, you forget about it and then you make little jokes and then it comes back to you and you go… ‘that just happened’ and ‘did that just happen’. ‘Is that real’. I woke up wondering if it was just a bad dream and it wasn’t, was it?” Williamson said in the aftermath of the final while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.
De Villiers recalls the heart-breaking defeat
AB de Villiers, the former South Africa skipper, recalled South Africa’s defeat to New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2015 World Cup. The Proteas agonisingly fell short of making it to their maiden final of the tournament in a thrilling game and some of their players were in tears after the match. AB de Villiers was one of them and moreover, he was the skipper of the team and was hurt the most.
“I know the feeling,” responded the former Protea international on Kane Williamson and clearly, it suggests that he is yet to get over that loss. New Zealand suffered even worse in the final as luck deserted them the trophy and it will take some time for their players to forget the clinching moments of the final.
Here’s De Villiers’ comment:
I know the feeling😳
