The 1st semi-final of the Under-19s Asia Cup 2019 will be played between India Under-19s and Sri Lanka Under-19s at the P Sara Oval in Colombo.
The match starts at 9:30 AM local time (4:00 AM GMT) (9:30 AM IST).
The defending champions of the Youth Asia Cup, the India Under-19s will feature in the first semi-final against the home team Sri Lanka. India qualified for the knockouts as they topped Group A by virtue of winning all three matches. The Indian team is easily a powerhouse at the Under-19 level as they are the current champions of the U19 CWC while the current players won the Tri-Series in England recently. On the other hand, Sri Lanka finished 2nd in Group B.
They recorded comfortable wins over Nepal and UAE but lost to Bangladesh in the last group match. The burden will be over the players with dual roles in the Lankan squad. The Sri Lankan team will gain confidence from the home series which they levelled against India last year. Until the back to back wins during that series, the Sri Lankans went winless in 27 consecutive Youth ODIs against India. Out of the 27 games, India won 26 matches while another game ended without a result.
Thunderstorms are expected on Thursday and there are pretty good chances of rain during the match duration. The venue has decent facilities which might not work if the rain doesn’t relent. The day between semis and finals could be used as a reserve day. But in case, if no winner is decided, India will go through to the final.
The Pakistan-Afghanistan match on the first day of the tournament here was a low scoring affair. However, the first innings scores in four unaffected matches this year have witnessed 250+ totals which include two successful chases. Bangladesh chased down 262 against Nepal after adding 100 runs for the 5th wicket. We might witness scores around 250 in this knockout match.
Average first innings score: 271 (Unaffected Youth ODI matches in 2019)
Record of chasing teams: Won – 2, Lost – 2
