The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a top platform for male cricketers to deliver. Players from around the world converge at the annual cricket carnival to showcase their skills with the bat and ball. The promising world of India’s women’s cricket is still to witness something same but it is gradually making progress.
The BCCI holds the Women’s T20 Challenge in between the IPL to encourage the women cricketers and this year, it is supposed to hold a four-side tournament unless hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Lead India spinner Poonam Yadav, however, has expressed an even ambitious dream. When asked by a fan recently the franchise she would have loved to play for had there been a women’s IPL team, the 28-year-old from Uttar Pradesh responded Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
The Super Kings are one of the most consistent teams in the Men’s IPL and have won the title three times. They served a two-year suspension in 2016 and 2017 but came back to win the title in 2018 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, who has been leading them since inception.
“Given a chance, would love to roll my arm over for @ChennaiIPL,” Poonam said. The leg-spinner recently had a phenomenal run with the ball in the women’s T20 World Cup in Australia (10 scalps from five matches) but could pick only a solitary wicket in the final.

Poonam Yadav has played for Supernovas in Women’s T20 Challenge
Poonam Yadav played for the IPL Supernovas in the Women’s T20 Challenge last year. She took two wickets in three matches in the edition that her team won by defeating Velocity by four wickets in the final. It was her run-checking performance in the tournament that made her appearance special.
Poonam, who was left frustrated in Australia for not having won the trophy (it was the second time that she came so close to a World Cup after England in 2017), supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for ‘Janta Curfew’ on Sunday as a precaution against the spreading COVID-19 pandemic.
