Umpiring has continued to be under the scanner in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). It started with the onfield official calling a short run during the match between KXIP and DC in the second match of the season itself. The call eventually cost KXIP the game while another incident on Tuesday caught the attention of many.
Umpire Paul Reifell was about give a wide during SRH vs CSK game only to withdraw himself after protests from MS Dhoni and bowler Shardul Thakur. Replays showed that the ball was close to tramline and it should’ve been given wide. The incident created a controversy and once again the umpiring was in the discussion.
In light of the same, although not commenting on it, India and RCB skipper Virat Kohli has called for the fielding captain to have an option to review the wide calls from the onfield umpires. Rather he also batted for the waise-high full tosses to also be reviewed pointing out the importance of such calls in the context of the game.
“As a captain, I would like to have the ability to review wide or a waist-high full-toss. Because, we’ve seen historically in high profile tournaments like IPL, these small things can be a big factor. If you lose the game by a run and are not able to review that one decision, it makes a massive difference,” Kohli said during a live Insta session with Puma India on Wednesday when asked one rule he would like to change in T20 cricket
KL Rahul bats for more runs for the 100+ metre sixes
Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) skipper KL Rahul was also present in the session along with Virat Kohli and he suggested rewards for batsmen for hitting longest sixes. He also cleared that his thinking is from the batsman’s perspective and interestingly, the new rule will definitely keep the teams in hunt despite needing more than six runs off the last ball. “As a batsman, if someone hits a six over 100m, it should be given more runs,” Rahul said.
Meanwhile, both Virat Kohli and Rahul are leading their respective teams in the ongoing IPL. While RCB is doing extremely well, the latter has got a tough job on his hands with KXIP team.
