South Africa’s horror show in the ongoing Test series against India continued on Sunday as the hosts thrashed them by an innings and 137 runs. India took less than a day to bowl out the Proteas to register their biggest win over the tourists in Tests. Almost everything went against the visitors in the match. Their bowling, batting as well as fielding left a lot to be desired which has disappointed Shoaib Akhtar.
The South Africa bowlers failed to contain the opposition as India posted a mammoth total of 601/5 before declaring. Skipper Virat Kohli starred with the bat by scoring a career-best 254* while Mayank Agarwal scored a century too. In reply, South Africa were all out for just 275 to concede a massive 326-run lead.
On the fourth day of the Test, the Proteas were asked to follow-on for the first time since 2008 and their fortunes did not change at all. Indian bowlers were once again up to task as they made light work of the visitors. South Africa kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for just 189 to concede the series with a match remaining.
Shoaib Akhtar dejected
Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar was disappointed with South Africa‘s terrible performance in the game. With India making the contest a one-sided affair, Shoaib Akhtar could not help but criticise the Faf du Plessis-led side. The legendary pacer took to Twitter to express his views on South Africa’s recent show.
He first mentioned the Proteas’ poor performance in the World Cup where they bowed out at the group stage. Akhtar then took aim at South Africa’s dismal displays in Tests before criticising the captaincy too. At the same time, he also congratulated India for winning 11 consecutive series at home. India broke Australia’s record to register most consecutive series wins at home.
“Disappointed with South Africa’s performance. First, ODI failure in World Cup. Now Test Cricket also going down. I dont see potential. Captaincy & performance really below par. Nevertheless, winning 11 series in a row at home is a big achievement. Congrats India,” wrote Shoaib Akhtar.
