Back in January 2019, it was known that Ahmedabad is set to redevelop the Sardar Patel Stadium, also known as Motera Stadium, into the world’s largest cricketing venue. The new stadium is set to accommodate as many as 1.1 lakh fans. Currently the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is the world’s largest cricket stadium with a capacity of 100,024 with the Eden Gardens being second.
The ground has a rich history as it was here back in 1987 that the legendary Sunil Gavaskar scored his 10,000th Test run. Around seven years later, Kapil Dev, the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian captain, broke Richard Hadlee’s record of 431 Test wickets. In the meantime, it has been learned that within the next six months, Ahmedabad will most probably unveil the stadium.
The earlier stadium had a capacity of 50,000. Recently, Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, stated that the new stadium is a vision of Narendra Modi, the Honourable Prime Minister of India. Shah expressed delight over the way things have panned out in the last few months.
I am sure it will be a moment of pride for India and Indian cricket, says Shah
“This project is the vision of our Prime Minister. It was his dream that Gujarat, and India, should have a world-class infrastructure in cricket, a game that generates a billion inspirations across the country. We are happy with the way work has progressed and the way the stadium is coming up,” Shah was quoted as saying in an interview with The Times of India (TOI).
The new stadium is likely to be unveiled in December this year or January 2020. Shah, also the president of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), mentioned it to be something to be proud of for the nation. Furthermore, Shah hailed the game of cricket in India as an emotion, owing to the passion with which the people follow the sport.
“In some months from now, the work will reach its completion and I am sure it will be a moment of pride for India and Indian cricket. The best expertise was sought on planning this entire project. Cricket in India is more than just a sport. It is an emotion,” Shah added.
