The Afghanistan team has seen a lot of movement in the leadership role in the team of late. It was in April of this year when long-time captain Asghar Afghan was removed from the role two months before the start of the ICC World Cup 2019 in England and Wales. This move was met with heavy criticism from all quarters of cricket even from outside of Afghanistan.
Afghan had taken over from Mohammad Nabi after a pretty successful 2015 World Cup outing where they defeated Scotland. Afghan formed a formidable unit that succeeded in doing many good things and also led them into their first-ever Test match against India and then also helped Afghanistan register their first Test win against Ireland.
However, the ACB officials for some reason sacked him and named Gulbadin Naib as ODI captain, Rahmat Shah as Test captain and Rashid Khan as T20I captain. Former captain Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan had called this unceremonious sacking of Afghan as wrong and criticized the board officials for this hasty decision, before an important tournament like the World Cup.
ACB makes Asghar Afghan the captain in all formats again
But under Gulbadin Naib, the team lost all of their 9 matches in the World Cup, with special focus on the game against Pakistan, which they should have won easily. After this, ACB went one step ahead and appointed Rashid Khan the captain across all the formats and he led them to a win over Bangladesh in Test match.
He also helped Afghanistan defeat West Indies in the T20I series in Lucknow recently. But now the Afghanistan Cricket Board officials have gone back to the original plans and have reappointed he 32-year-old Asghar Afghan the captain in all three formats of the game. The board confirmed the news on its official Twitter handle and also cleared that the decision has been taken by the ACB top management.
Afghan has appeared in over 100 ODIs for his team and has featured in all the four Tests that Afghanistan has played till now. He has one century under his name in ODIs and has slammed a total of 18 half-centuries in all the three formats combined.
