Prior to the start of the 2019 Ashes, the eyes were on Jason Roy, who had done exceptionally in the World Cup. The Durban-born was consistent and the selectors rewarded him with his maiden Test call-up versus Ireland at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. Though he faltered in the first innings, the right-handed Roy made up for it with a crucial half-century in the second instance.
However, in England’s home Test series versus Australia, he hasn’t got going. After failures in the first two encounters at the Headingley and Lord’s respectively, Roy perished to a couple of low scores in the third Test at the Headingley in Leeds as well. He was dismissed for nine in the first innings following which he could only manage a mere eight runs in the second innings.
Pat Cummins breached his defence and rattled his timber. Roy played down the wrong line and had to pay a hefty price. England are chasing 359 to win the match and Roy’s dismissal reduced them to 15 for the loss of two wickets in the seventh over. Even as he was returning to the dressing room, he uttered the F-word a few times to vent his frustration. His reactions were caught in the cameras.
A dismal Ashes for Jason Roy
Jason Roy has been an absolute disaster in the ongoing Ashes. In three Tests, he has managed only 57 runs at a forgettable average of 9.50. The fourth Test is scheduled to be played at the Old Trafford in Manchester and it remains to be seen whether the selectors drop Roy or give him more chances to settle down in the longer format. As far as the Leeds Test is concerned, the hosts have lost Joe Root early on the fourth day.
Time isn’t an issue for them as there are two full days remaining provided rain doesn’t halt play. After the fall of the first two wickets, Joe Root and Joe Denly steadied the ship with a partnership of 126 runs. It was a bouncer from Hazlewood that got rid of Denly, who scored 50. At the close of play on Day three, Joe Root was batting on 75 and along with him was the left-handed Ben Stokes.
