Rory Burns finally put the openers’ curse to rest with a brilliant century in England’s first innings against Australia in the first Ashes 2019 Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Burns was one of the many openers who were tried before, fourteen Test innings for England before this series, an average of just 22.
However, this one innings has made him famous amongst the swarms of England fans. He took the punishment at the start of the innings from Pattinson, Cummins, and Siddle and even played the wily Lyon with aplomb. His innings was studded with 17 fours and though not as dramatic as Steve Smith’s century in the first innings, it helped England gain an important lead over their rivals.
‘Haven’t faced Nathan Lyon before’
Rory Burns was interviewed by the official broadcasters of the Ashes series and during the interview, the opener was quoted as saying, “I haven’t faced Nathan Lyon before. I just wanted to see what his variations were and how he was gonna try to move me around the crease.”
“I felt most comfortable staying a little bit of leg side of the ball. You could almost see him go up and try to hit the shit… sorry, hit the rough a little bit, and then when he was trying to slide one on to hit the pad. They’ve still got a newish ball and we’re still behind. If we get our noses in front we’ll try to make it as big as we can.”

Burns in the flow uttered a curse word during the interview. He realized his folly immediately and also apologized for the same, which left both him and the interviewer in splits, but given that he scored a century that helped England gain an upper hand in the match, his folly was overlooked. He will hope that his ton helps the home side win against the visitors and get a 1-0 lead in the 5-match series.
Meanwhile, England finished their first innings on 374 with Chris Woakes making 37 and Stuart Broad slamming 29 runs as well, stretching to lead to 90 valuable runs. In the second innings of Australia, Moeen Ali removed Bancroft for 7 and Warner fell to Broad for 8 and becoming the Englishman’s 450th Test victim.
