Australian cricket has been under the scanner lately after Cameron Bancroft made some sensational statements regarding the ill-famed 2018 Cape Town Test which saw him, Steve Smith, and David Warner getting banned. Moreover, Cricket Australia has even claimed to reinvestigate the issue if any new information is provided. In midst of this, another disturbing story featuring an Australian cricketer has come out.
On Monday, Australian cricketer Aaron Summers appeared in a Darwin court after being arrested last week for allegedly possessing child abuse material and grooming a minor. Summers is a right-arm pacer who has played three one-day for Tasmania. He has also represented Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. The 25-year-old reportedly appeared in the local court with the police alleging that the cricketer’s mobile phone contains child abuse videos.
“A matter was brought to the attention of NT Cricket and was immediately actioned in accordance with our member protection policy. In line with the policy the matter was referred to the relevant authorities and is now being handled by police,” Sydney Morning Herald quoted a Cricket Australia statement as saying.
Aaron Summers’ mobile phone contained child abuse videos: Police
As per a statement released by the Northern Territories Police Service, Summers had been in contact with several children to execute such illegal activities. “Police will allege that the man’s mobile device contained a number of videos containing child abuse material. There was also evidence that the man had been in contact with up to 10 children to attempt to procure further illicit photographs,” the statement read.
The police officials strongly condemned the cricketer’s action and called his behaviour ‘despicable.’ “Young people should be able to enjoy their childhood without the fear of predators approaching them for their own appalling intentions. The Northern Territory Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team will continue to work with national and international partners to keep the most vulnerable in our community safe,” read the statement further.
The accused fast bowler was last seen in the Abu Dhabi T10 League earlier this year where he represented Deccan Gladiators. However, his upcoming cricket career is under clouds with such massive allegations on him. The court is expected to give its verdict over the matter soon.
