In recent times Bangladesh and controversy have been going hand in hand. Earlier, their high profile all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was hit with a backdated ban by ICC after he was found guilty for breaching code of conduct. Now, their promising left-handed pacer Qazi Onik is set to get banned after his dope test resulted in positive.
Qazi Onik emerged as one of the promising fast bowlers in the country. In four List A games, he has grabbed 15 wickets for his side. He has propelled as one of the best left-hand pacers in the domestic circuit in Bangladesh. The speedster was also a part of the Bangladesh U19 team in the 2018 World Cup in New Zealand.
Bangladesh suffers a major blow as young left-arm pacer found positive in dope test
Onik’s dope test resulted in positive during the National Cricket League. The board confirmed the news on Saturday and national chief selector Minhajul Abedin said that his name will be removed from the age group structure of BCB. Abedin also recited that the left-arm pacer will no longer be the part of NCL. The board has come to a conclusion that his name will be excluded from the draft of the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League 2019.
Onik made his BPL debut last season, where he played for the Dhaka Dynamites under Shakib’s leadership. As per the reports in Cricbuzz, Onik failed in the dope test due to substance abuse. And according to BCB anti-doping policy, the bowler is expected to get banned for the next two years. However, the ban might get reduced to one year depending on the cricketer’s degree of fault.
“We have been informed by the medical team that he was found positive in the dope test during the NCL and we decided not to include him in the further part of NCL. We also decided not to include his name in the BPL players draft,” the Bangladesh national selector was quoted as saying.
“He was part in some of our program but now we have decided not to include him in our structure until we are getting the full report from the medical team,” Abedin, also a former Bangladesh cricketer, added.
