Bangladesh cricket is currently going through a turbulent phase of time. There seems to be a massive miscommunication between the country’s players and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). A couple of days ago, the cricketers assembled for a press conference in national capital Dhaka where they went on a strike and put forth a 11-point demand to the BCB for resuming playing the sport.
From Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, a number of others were present during the interaction. The revolt has come prior to the Tigers’ tour of India, starting November 3, and it has come under the clouds. In the meantime, Sheikh Hasina, the honourable Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has stepped in and enquired about the state of cricket in the country.
Mashrafe wasn’t a part of the press conference
It has also been learned that she asked Mashrafe Mortaza about the crisis and now wants him to request the players for resuming playing cricket. “She wanted to know the latest about cricket’s situation,” BCB director Mahbubul Anam was quoted as saying in local daily Samakal. Mashrafe, who last played in the 2019 World Cup, wasn’t a part of the recent conference with the media.
On a Facebook post, he said that he wasn’t aware of the meeting taking place, but wished for the betterment of cricket in the country. The Narail Express only plays ODIs and the Tigers won’t be playing the format for the next few months. Hence, it’s not known when he’ll return to the field. Meanwhile, speculations surrounding his retirement from the sport continue to take place.
Coming back to the controversy, it isn’t known yet whether Mashrafe has already contacted the players. On Tuesday, October 22, the BCB agreed to one of the key demands to bring back the Dhaka Premier League’s club transfer system following a meeting of the Dhaka league committee.
The players have already missed the start of the fitness and conditioning camp on Wednesday, prior to the tour of India. However, as per reports, more such agreement from the cricket board are on the way. On Tuesday, BCB chief Nazmul Hasan Papon also lashed out after the step by the players.
