Javed Omar Belim, the former Bangladesh cricketer, won’t be able to take part in future events, organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The same was confirmed by an official from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on conditions of anonymity. The 43-year-old Omar was earlier appointed as the manager of the women’s team for the last couple of series.
He was also there with the team during the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia. It has now been alleged that he passed on team information. It has been learned that the apex cricket board has asked the BCB to not include Omar in future ICC events.
“Yes, we’ve been informed by the ICC to not include him in any future event. To be honest, it is quite disappointing,” a BCB official was quoted as saying on Cricbuzz. Omar’s activities were being scrutinised by the ICC. After gathering enough evidence, the ICC delivered their message to the BCB.
Javed Omar, one of Bangladesh’s stalwart
The Dhaka-born was one of the Tigers’ most dependable batsmen during his playing days. Back in April 1995, the right-hander made his ODI debut against India. Six years later in 2001, Belim forayed into Test cricket against Zimbabwe. He didn’t get a chance to play in the T20 format though.
In 40 Tests and 59 ODIs, he managed to score 1,720 and 1,312 runs respectively. During his career, which spanned around 12 years, he smashed 18 half-centuries. His only century came against Pakistan in a Test at Peshawar back in August 2003. In the first innings, he scored 119 off 357.
To his dismay, the knock, laced with 17 boundaries, went in vain as the Tigers lost the encounter by nine wickets. He was also a part of the 2007 World Cup squad when Bangladesh qualified for the Super Six for the first time after beating Rahul Dravid’s India in the Group stage.
His last international match was against Sri Lanka in Colombo on July 2007. In 102 first-class and 108 List A career, Belim churned out over 7,700 runs with 10 centuries and 37 half-centuries. Omar was known as someone, who could grind for hours when his team was under pressure.
