While the buildup to the first T20I between India and Bangladesh was dominated by the pollution level in Delhi, not much was heard on the issue from Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Earlier reports suggested that the T20I might be shifted to another venue due to the alarming condition in the national capital.
And when Bangladesh players and staff members sported masks to train outside, the apprehensions only grew. But amidst all these, not even a single word was heard from BCB. Nazmul Hasan, BCB’s president, has now revealed that the board was disappointed that the first T20I was not shifted from Delhi to another venue due to pollution concerns.
He said that the BCB was not aware of the pollution level in Delhi. However, as soon as they got to know about it, they asked the BCCI to change the venue but it did not make any difference. BCCI’s president Sourav Ganguly made it clear that it was too late to reschedule the game. Nazmul also said that he was in constant touch with the players to make sure they are doing well.
”To be honest it is not something like we have known about it earlier. When we came to know about it, at the last minute, we had contacted them. I was scared (based on) what I have seen on the internet,” Nazmul Hasan was quoted as saying by a cricket website before the first T20I.
“I was not supposed to come here but made the decision suddenly. I was keeping in touch with the coach along with Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur, and they said that though there is a problem they will be able to manage it. At that point I thought unless I go I cannot understand the gravity of it,” he added.
Nazmul Hasan shocked
Nazmul Hasan further opened up on just how bad the conditions are in Delhi right now. The BCB supremo said that he was shocked to see smog inside the airport. It was then he realised that playing in those conditions was very tough before saying that he was disappointed over BCCI not shifting the game to another venue.
”I could not believe my eyes, I saw smog inside the airport. It was not dew, it was smog. In the morning when I came out, the condition was even worse. From that point, I was saying how can we play? We are not seeing anything and that is the reality. From the very beginning, they [BCCI] were saying that they cannot change it. They said that we were too late to inform them about our concerns. I was disappointed about it,” said Nazmul Hasan.
