Since its initiation, Indian Premier League has grown by leaps and bounds. Be it the competitiveness or the grandeur– the tournament has reached a new level since its inception and has now become a dream for every young player. Every player aspires to shine in the tournament and make himself noticed as the IPL has now transformed into a worldwide phenomenon.
In the razmataz of the IPL and other domestic leagues, many people believe that the stature of domestic cricket is going down with every passing year. One of the primary reasons behind this is the massive pay-checks that IPL players receive. However, in a move to change the situation, BCCI is planning to hike the pays in the domestic circuit.
Domestic players, who had got a 200 per cent hike in the Committee of Administrators’ dispensation, could make anything between Rs. 50 to 70 lakh per annum due to the new pay hikes. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly wants domestic players to get a substantial amount so that they don’t have any regret of playing the game even after bidding adieu to it.
“This obsession about IPL contracts has to end somewhere. The domestic fees would have to be made lucrative enough to make it worth for the Indian cricketers to continue to play in the domestic circuit,” a top BCCI source told Sportskeeda.
Amid the stern situation across the globe including India due to the coronavirus pandemic, the announcement of pay hike is currently on hold but the BCCI is eager to increase the pay which the players are currently getting.
Meanwhile, many cricket boards including BCCI are anticipated to incur losses due to no sporting event in the near future. The much-awaited IPL 2020 also has clouds of uncertainty hovering around it as no one currently knows about the possibility of the tournament. Several reports have suggested that the tournament will be cancelled altogether for this year.
