23rd October 2019 will forever be remembered as a red-letter day in the history of this beautiful game; a day where the godfather of modern-day Indian Cricket, former captain Sourav Chandidas Ganguly became the first cricketer to become the head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 65 years.
Ganguly, who was elected unopposed in the recently concluded elections of the BCCI, assumed office as the president of the most powerful cricket organization in the world on Thursday. The former Indian captain, who represented the country in 311 One-day Internationals and 113 Test matches is one of the foremost architects of the current picture of Indian cricket.
Ganguly took over the reins of the Indian side when cricket in the country was mired by issues both on and off the field. While the team as a whole was getting shellacked on the field, some of the most prominent players had been dragged in the match-fixing scandal.
It was in these tumultuous times where Sourav took up the responsibility of repairing Indian cricket’s image. Along with compatriots like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, and Javagal Srinath, the Prince of Kolkata set out on putting India back at the top of the cricketing landscape.
And so, in came precocious talents like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, MS Dhoni who with time, not only went on to fulfill their incredible ability but also went on to script their name into the annals of not only Indian cricket but also World Cricket.
