It was recently learned that the Indian cricket team is set to sport a new brand on their jersey. The Indian cricketers will get a new jersey as Chinese mobile manufacturer Oppo handed over the sponsorship rights to Byju’s, which is an educational technology and online tutorial firm. The Men in Blue will don the newly-sponsored outfit from September 5, 2019, to March 31, 2022.
The deal between BCCI and Oppo was inked for five years and it was reportedly worth 1079 crores. In March that year, Oppo won the rights after outbidding Vivo mobiles’ 768 crore bid. According to the deal, Oppo was paying BCCI Rs 4.61 crore per bilateral match and Rs 1.56 crore for an ICC event game. After the new signing, BCCI CEO Rahul Johri also expressed delight.
Cricket is the heartbeat of all Indians
“Byju’s will be taking over all obligations of the current team sponsor OPPO mobiles India private limited (OPPO). Byju’s will now be seen on the Indian team jersey from September 2019 when the home series against South Africa begins,” a BCCI media release was quoted as saying on July 26.
Byju Raveendran, the founder of Byju’s, also sounded proud over their new association. “We are proud to be the Indian Cricket Team sponsor. Cricket is the heartbeat of all Indians and we are thrilled to be an integral part of our much-loved team.
As a learning company, Byju’s has always recognised the critical role that sport plays in a child’s development. Just as cricket inspires a billion budding dreams across India, we too as a learning company hope to inspire the love of learning in every child’s heart,” Raveendran said.
India are scheduled to tour the West Indies for a T20I, Test and ODI series following which the new jersey will come to the fore. The Indian team management will also undergo quite a few changes with the appointment of a new head coach also on the cards.
The last day of application for the head coach’s and the support staff’s roles in on July 30. In the meantime, the board has released a first glance of the Indian outfit with the brand of Byju’s engraved on it.
