The Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) has caused widespread outrage across all parts of the country and especially the North-East region like Assam and Tripura. Mobile services have been shut down following a massive furore and curfew has been imposed in Assam and Guwahati in the wake of an escalating situation.
And, while all this happening, Assam is currently locking horns with Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati while Tripura is battling against Jharkhand at the Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium in Agartala in their 2019-20 Ranji Trophy opener.
While the matches have still remained unaffected thus far, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to take a call on the proceedings. According to Saba Karim, the BCCI is receiving reports from the state association in Assam, and upon receiving the report, the call will be made as to whether the game will continue or get called-off.
“We are taking a call right now, we are receiving reports from the host association which is Assam. Then we will see because curfew has been imposed, so we will take a call on that. We are monitoring the situation,” Saba Karim told media as quoted by Times Now. When asked if the matches have been suspended Saba Karim responded: “Not yet.”
Indefinite curfew imposed in Assam and Guwahati following massive protests
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill- one that will give citizenship to the religiously persecuted minorities of adjoining countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan has been the cause of widespread violence and furore- especially in the North-Eastern states like Assam, with protesters which include students, who took to the streets across the state to stage their descent against the bill.
Following the passing of the bill in Rajya Sabha (125 Ayes, 99 No), the state government proceeded to declare an indefinite curfew in the wake of an escalating situation. Meanwhile, Assam is locked in a battle with Services where they require a further 168 runs to win their opening game and are currently placed in a precarious position at 5-74.
Tripura, on the other hand, enforced the follow-on on Jharkhand, after having bowled the latter out for 136 in response to their first innings total of 289.
