The first two sessions of the opening Test between India and South Africa belonged to the hosts. In Visakhapatnam, Faf du Plessis and Co fielded three spinners- Keshav Maharaj, Dane Piedt and Senuran Muthusamy, who made his international debut. The home team won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first. It was a big game for Rohit Sharma since he was opening the batting.
Along with him was Mayank Agarwal, who made his Test debut last year versus Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It was a challenge for the openers as with the ball in hand were Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander, both of whom have tormented batters across the globe. However, Rohit and Mayank didn’t get flustered and staved off the new cherry with grace and elegance.
Rohit and Mayank step on the gas
Once they got the measure of the conditions, there was no stopping them. Rohit got to a half-century in the first session itself off only 84 balls. In the second session, Rohit started playing some more shots, much to the agony of the opposition. The focus was on him since he bagged a duck in the warm-up match prior to the game and he would’ve wished to make amends for the failure.
The Mumbai batsman passed with flying colours and got to his century off 154 balls. He went into the 90s with a couple of sixes off Piedt and didn’t take much time in getting to his ton. It would’ve given some sort of a relief to the 32-year-old as he has strained to find his feet in the format. On the other hand, Agarwal gave him good support and stayed not out on 84 runs from 183 balls.
At 2:04 PM local time, the skies became grey and the heavens opened up severely. The rain became lighter in a while, but the conditions didn’t improve enough for play to resume. At 3:31 PM local time, play was called off for the day. India ended the day on 202 for no loss in 59.1 overs.
In the meantime, Brad Hogg, the former Australian cricketer, took a dig at the Proteas. He posted a GIF which showed a person, being happy after getting drenched in rain. He captioned the GIF and wrote, “South Africa will be happy with their final session today. #INDvSA
