As the entire world continues to be under lockdown, former New Zealand player Brendon McCullum gave some brilliant proposals of resumption of cricket in countries that are slowly evading the COVID-19 threat. The ideas proposed by the ex-Blackcaps captain is mainly regarding the Big Bash League in Australia.

McCullum said it would be a great opportunity for Big Bash to return to its former glory, considering there isn’t a lot of international cricket happening now. The former New Zealand skipper pointed out that it will be a great opportunity to relaunch the league on a bigger scale for the Australian fans. This is when the Kiwi proposed an idea of having a team from New Zealand competing in the Big Bash League.

“What an opportunity for the Big Bash if there’s a shortage of international cricket,” McCullum told SEN Radio. “If we’re being honest, the Big Bash has tailed off a little bit in its following of late and what a great opportunity to really launch that back into Australian sporting fans’ eyes and what a great opportunity to bring a New Zealand team in the BBL,” he added.

The TV ratings for the BBL has gone down significantly over the past two years. With the rise in several leagues across the globe, the interest in BBL has certainly reduced a bit.

The former Kiwi skipper also proposed an idea where players from New Zealand can be used as local players. He cited this as a good idea considering there won’t be many international players who would be ready to travel given the current situation. The former wicketkeeper also mentioned that it would be a great opportunity for New Zealanders to perform in Australia.

“Perhaps you could even use New Zealand players as local players because there may be a distinct lack of overseas players who will want to travel, especially high-quality ones,” McCullum said. “A little bit of creative thinking and another opportunity to get some New Zealanders across Tasman,” he added.

There have been talks that the Australian and New Zealand governments could soon resume travel between their territories. Both countries have almost fought away the COVID-19 scare. There hasn’t been any rise in the number of cases in either country and the situation could get back to normal very soon.
