The new year 2020 is upon us and it is a World Cup year for all the cricket lovers with Australia hosting the T20 World Cup. There are many contenders for winning the World Cup including the defending and two-time T20 champs the West Indies and the hosts Australia. Amid the anticipation for the T20 World Cup, Brian Lara has revealed his favourites to clinch the title along with the player who has the potential to break his 400-run milestone.
While Lara ruled the possibility of Steve Smith scoring 400 runs while batting at No. 4 for Australia in the longest format of the game, the Windies legend picked the likes of David Warner and Indian duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma who could touch the iconic milestone of scoring 400 runs in a Test innings.
Lara ruled out Steve Smith in the list, because of his batting position in the Australian team, but Warner and Rohit both open in Test cricket and Warner recently hit a sublime 335 against Pakistan. Rohit meanwhile made his debut as opener recently and slammed three centuries including a double ton.
“It would be difficult for Steve Smith to do it batting at No.4 for Australia. He is a great player but he doesn’t dominate. You know a player like David Warner for sure. A player like Virat Kohli, who gets in early and gets set. He is a very attacking player. Rohit Sharma on his day. So they have got quite a group of players who can do so,” Lara told India Today.
Brian Lara lauds Virat Kohli and Co.
West Indies legend Brian Lara was appreciative of Virat Kohli and his team and was impressed with the way they played the game. “I think they are definitely capable of winning all tournaments that they play. I think what Virat Kohli and company and the Indian team has to appreciate the fact that everybody sort of target India. Everybody knows that some point of time one team is going to play that important match against India. If it’s a quarter-final, semi-final and final,” said the West Indies legend.
Virat Kohli led the Indian team to the finals of 2017 Champions Trophy in England, only to lose to arch-rivals Pakistan and then the team lost a close encounter to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals. Not winning any ICC silverware is the only criticism of Kohli’s captaincy, given that he has kept the team numero uno in Tests for over three years now.
