Imad Wasim, the Pakistan cricketer, got a shot at international cricket in 2015 when the team was searching for a replacement of the suspended Saeed Ajmal. Ever since, he has developed into the matured character, representing his nation in 52 ODIs and 35 T20Is. In 2006, the southpaw was a part of the Pakistan U19 World Cup-winning side and he hasn’t looked back ever since.
Recently, the Glamorgan-born also expressed his desire to lead Pakistan at the highest level and mentioned the same to be an honour. The left-hander has left the decision on the management and said that he isn’t someone to back out from challenges. Recently, Sarfaraz Ahmed’s credentials as the skipper have come under the scanner and he might well be relieved of his services.
I have never backed down from a challenge, says Wasim
“As a young cricketer, I have always wanted to play for Pakistan and being offered captaincy would be an honour for me. However, this is something for the PCB to decide and I would never go to them and ask for this position…… My job is to play cricket and if I am given the responsibility to captain the side, it would be great as I have never backed down from a challenge,” Imad told Pak Passion.
Wasim has the experience of leading the Pakistan U19 team when he captained in the 2008 World Cup in Malaysia. In that tournament, Wasim scored 35 runs and picked up eight wickets. It was the same tournament where Virat Kohli, the current Indian captain, made a mark for himself.
Wasim doesn’t wish to play Test cricket
Imad doesn’t wish to play Test cricket though due to his injury-marred career. The 30-year-old feels that he won’t be able to sustain throughout the entire duration of a match. Wasim last played red-ball cricket for Islamabad back in October 2017.
“Test cricket is not something I would like to pursue as part of my career. Due to my history of injuries, I would rather just play white-ball cricket as I do not think I would be able to last the duration of a Test match,” the all-rounder added.
Wasim recently played for Nottinghamshire in the T20 Blast in England. Moreover, when he was young, Imad played league cricket in England and Ireland. He recently plied his trade in the 2019 edition of the World Cup and also got the Player of the Match against Afghanistan.
