Over the last six month or so, there has been a lot of commotion regarding the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 2020 edition of the T20 event was set to start on March 29. However, the COVID-19 pandemic ended up playing spoilsport and the tournament had to be postponed for an indefinite time. For the time being, India is third in the list of coronavirus-affected cases worldwide.
As far as the IPL is concerned, after a lot of deliberations, the tournament had to be moved out of India bearing in mind the current scenario. The IPL will now be taking place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 19 to November 10. It will be a 15-day affair and precautionary measures will be in place keeping in mind the safety of the players and the others.
BCCI takes a major decision on IPL
In the meantime, the world’s richest cricket board also took a major decision. On Sunday, August 2, the board decided to retain all the sponsors of the IPL, including the Chinese brands. It means that VIVO, a Chinese mobile company, will remain as the title sponsors for the upcoming tournament. The decision was taken in IPL Governing Council meeting on Sunday.
“All I can say is that all our sponsors are with us. Hopefully, you can read between the lines,” a Governing Council member was quoted as saying in Times Now. Back in 2017, the VIVO signed a deal of five years with the BCCI as the major sponsor of the league worth Rs 2,199 crores. However, BCCI’s latest call hasn’t gone down well with the netizens by any stretch of the imagination.
A few weeks ago, 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives in a cross-border fight with the Chinese troopers. Thereafter, the Indian government banned 59 Chinese applications, including Tik-Tok and Helo. Calls for removing VIVO as IPL’s title sponsors also did the rounds. However, that didn’t happen.
After BCCI’s call, a hashtag by the name of ‘Chinese Premier League’ started doing the rounds on social media. In their tweets, the netizens didn’t turn any stones down in slamming the BCCI.
Here’s how the netizens reacted: –
When China is refusing to even discuss Pangong Tso standoff in disengagement talks, then we are about to celebrate IPL having all Chinese sponsors? Then it's better to call it as #ChinesePremierLeague pic.twitter.com/8N9UbDiTIv
