Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies all-rounder, reckons that Chris Gayle doesn’t quite get lauded enough for his credentials in the T20 format. The Jamaican left-hander is currently the all-time leading run-scorer in T20 cricket, having notched 13,296 runs in 404 matches. He also has 22 centuries to go with 82 fifties and at the age of 40, Gayle is still going great guns.
The southpaw last played for the Chattogram Challengers in the 2020 edition of the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Even at the fag end of his career, Gayle is among the most sough-after T20 cricketers. Bravo, who came out of retirement after hanging his boots initially back in 2018, feels that Gayle deserves more appreciation for his contribution in T20 cricket.
It’s impossible to match Chris Gayle’s domination
“Chris Gayle doesn’t get the accolades he deserves as being the best T20 player in the world,” Bravo was quoted as saying in ESPNcricinfo. “But hands down, there will never ever be another T20 cricketer like him. No matter how much you try, there won’t be someone as good as Gayle. It’s impossible to dominate the game like how Gayle does,” Bravo said.
Bravo has also flourished in the format, being the all-time leading wicket-taker. The Trinidadian has 497 wickets in 455 matches. With the bat, he has 6,307 runs with 20 half-centuries. Both Bravo and Gayle were set to take part in the 2020 IPL, which has been postponed due to COVID-19.
Gayle was recently picked to play for the St Lucia Zouks in the 2020 Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He played the last season for the Jamaica Tallawahs, but barring a century against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, he looked a tad off-colour. In the IPL, he was set to represent Kings XI Punjab.
Bravo also sounded bemused by how the Caribbean team is called the ‘dark horse’ in the shortest format. “It’s crazy that the West Indies are still being considered dark horses in T20 cricket,” the veteran added.
Currently, the West Indies, led by Kieron Pollard, are ranked ninth in the format. However, recently, they took down Sri Lanka by 2-0 in the away T20I series. Andre Russell became the Player of the Series.
