An action-packed cricket contest can never be completed without a lively commentary. When it is a match between India and Australia, emotions, and passion takes the better of the commentators, and they tend to commit some mistakes on air. During the current match between both the cricketing giants, the commentary panel tried to keep fans glued to all the developments on the field, but an ‘oops’ moment came up clearly on the table.
On day 2 of the Sydney Test, the broadcaster has to put up an apology after Shane Warne and Andre Symonds chose some distasteful words on air. However, day 3 of the same Test saw a mix-up between Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, and it had to be corrected immediately before things could have turned more confusing. The presenter of Channel 7, James Brayshaw, had an embarrassing moment when he referred to Sunil Gavaskar as Sachin Tendulkar.
A commentary change had to be introduced in between while India were batting at 207/7. As Brayshaw called Gavaskar as Tendulkar, former Australian player Damien Fleming pitched in to correct the confusion. While people wondered if there is Tendulkar in the commentary box, it only turned to be confusion. Here is how the conversation took place.
Conversation showing mix up between Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar
Brayshaw: “Sachin Tendulkar, welcome, and also Damien Fleming.”
Fleming: “Sachin Tendulkar’s in the commentary box?”
Brayshaw: “We were just talking about him.”
Fleming: “[This is] the great man, the little master.”
Brayshaw: “My apologies Sunil, we were just talking…”
Gavaskar took the entire event sportingly and stated that he is honoured to be referred to as Sachin Tendulkar, rather.
Gavaskar: “I am flattered, I am flattered to be called Sachin Tendulkar.”
Brayshaw: “We were just talking about him a second ago.”
Gavaskar was another legend in the field of cricket, who became the first batter in the world to score 10,000 runs in the purest format of the game. He bagged several records on his name during his prime days. However, his records were eventually taken over by Sachin Tendulkar in the longest format of the game.
