The St Kitts and Nevis Patriots have made a disappointing start after losing both their first two matches versus the Knight Riders and the Warriors. Carlos Brathwaite and Co have looked good in patches, but none of them has been able to deliver the killer blows. Their next match is versus the Jamaica Tallawahs at the Warner Park and Patriots’ will want to open their account at home.
Their bowlers have blown hot and they’ll need to bring forth their A-game against the strong Tallawahs’ lineup. The visitors, led by Chris Gayle, lost their first game versus the Knights and will be keen to make a comeback. On head-to-head, the Tallawahs have a 5-4 lead over the Patriots. Even in St Kitts, Jamaica have won two out of five matches with their last victory coming in 2016.
Pitch and Conditions
Four matches were played at Warner Park in CPL 2018 out of which three were won by the chasing teams. The pitch was an excellent one with scores over 160 most times and even the 200-run being breached. There is a chance of a downpour around 7 PM, one hour into the game. The temperature will be around the 28 degrees Celsius. There will be dew, making batting easier in the second half.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots
The Patriots don’t have many alternatives to chose from. Evin Lewis, who was expected to play a massive role, only has a strike-rate of 107 with 45 runs under his belt. Devon Thomas got a quickfire 62 in the last game, but overall, the middle-order hasn’t quite kicked in. Mohammad Hafeez has strained as he has scored 30 at a dismal strike-rate of 75 and hasn’t picked up a wicket either.
Brathwaite has been abysmal with the bat and he hasn’t done anything of sorts with the ball as well. Fabian Allen has batted lower down, but has arguably been their best bet with the willow. With 63 runs at a strike-rate of 190.90, he deserves a promotion in the order. In the bowling lineup, a lot would depend on Sheldon Cottrell. The likes of Alzarri Joseph and Rayad Emrit need to step up.
Kjorn Ottley, Evin Lewis, Devon Thomas (wk), Mohammad Hafeez, Carlos Brathwaite (C), Fabian Allen, Jason Mohammed, Usama Mir, Rayad Emrit, Alzarri Joseph, Sheldon Cottrell
The Tallawahs can replace Christopher Lamont with leg-spinner Imran Khan. Lamont conceded 38 runs in his three overs versus the Knights. The team will hope for their power-packed opening pair of Chris Gayle and Glenn Phillips to make utilization of the powerplay. George Worker and Chadwick Walton got runs, but they couldn’t quite press the accelerator when the rate was mounting.
Rovman Powell will wish to make amends after failing. Andre Russell was devastating the other night, but it seemed as if he came to bat a bit too low in a stiff run-chase. Russell’s role with the ball in hand would also be crucial. Oshane Thomas leaked runs and he’ll be looking to get his rhythm back. Jerome Taylor tried his best, but he now needs to pick some wickets, being a senior bowler.
Chris Gayle (C), Glenn Phillips (wk), Chadwick Walton, Rovman Powell, George Worker, Andre Russell, Shamar Springer, Steven Jacobs, Jerome Taylor, Christopher Lamont/Imran Khan, Oshane Thomas
