Following the first innings of their first home match against Jamaica Tallawahs, it wouldn’t have been wrong in saying that St Kitts and Nevis Patriots were staring at their third defeat in a row. But Carlos Brathwaite and Co didn’t throw in the towel as the hosts went on to record the highest ever run-chase in the history of the CPL and they did it with seven deliveries to spare.
The Patriots will next be up against the Barbados Tridents, who lost their opening match at the hands of table-toppers- Guyana Amazon Warriors. Jason Holder’s Tridents were the cellar dwellers last season and they’ll be desperate to climb the ladder. On head-to-head, Barbados have only managed to win two out of their eight matches over the Patriots with their last win coming in 2016.
Pitch and Conditions
If the pitch remains the same, then the bowlers could be in for another nightmare of a day. On a track where even 241 wasn’t a safe score, it’s better to field first. The dew in the second half is again likely to work in the batsmen’s favour. The weather will stay clear during match-time with the temperature around the 28 degrees Celsius mark. The humidity will be in the high 70s.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots
There’s no update on the reasons behind Sheldon Cottrell’s exclusion from the last encounter. If he comes in then Dominic Drakes is likely to face the axe. Evin Lewis churned out the fastest ever CPL half-century off 17 balls and his confidence will be high. Laurie Evans has added more firepower to their batting and got 41. Fabian Allen has been the Patriots’ most consistent batsman thus far.
Allen has 100 runs at a strike-rate of 208.33. Concerns remain over Carlos Brathwaite’s form. Apart from getting a couple of ducks in three matches, he has picked up only one wicket at a forgettable average of 104. Shamarh Brooks and Usama Mir have shown that they can play the big shots at the death. The onus will also be on the likes of Alzarri Joseph and Rayad Emrit to stop the run flow.

The Tridents can give the experienced Shai Hope a chance in place of Leniko Boucher. All eyes were on Alex Hales, who could do nothing, but bag a golden duck. The Englishman need to find his feet in favourable batting conditions. Johnson Charles can hit the long ball and his role will be critical in the mandatory powerplay. JP Duminy and Jason Holder are more than capable of scoring runs quickly.
Jonathan Carter needs to shoulder some responsibility as well. Lower down the order, Ashley Nurse showed that he can find the boundary, having hit three fours and as many sixes. But he needs to show accuracy while bowling. Sandeep Lamichhane bowled only one over the other night and it remains to be seen how he is used. Their bowlers also need to show more accuracy at the death.
