Andre Russell, along with Glenn Phillips, Sandeep Lamichhane, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, was one of Jamaica Tallawahs’ most crucial performers in the 2020 Caribbean Premier League (CPL). However, the event didn’t end on a happy note for him and it summed up his team’s shoddy performance throughout the season. The Tallawahs needed him badly in the semis against the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR).
He came to bat after Fawad Ahmed cleaned up Nkrumah Bonner, who scored 41 off 42 and was also the Tallawahs’ top run-scorer on the day. Russell started with a couple of singles but got out to Sunil Narine. However, he wasn’t happy with his dismissal by any stretch of the imagination. The batsman came down the track seeing that Narine shortened his length to some extent.
Dre-Russ gest out cheaply
The ball spun in, deflected off the pad to the slip cordon where Dwayne Bravo took a simple catch. Umpire Nigel Duguid didn’t have any hesitation in raising his finger whatsoever. After being given out, the 32-year-old Russell was furious and he stretched his arms in frustration. The Jamaican also slammed his bat on the ground in fury, realizing the importance of the wicket.
There’s no Decision Review System (DRS) in CPL 2020 and it proved to be costly for the Tallawahs to a significant extent. Once Russell got out, TKR’s road for the rest of the innings became pretty smooth and Jamaica could only end with 107 for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs.

The semi-final turned out to be a one-sided affair as the Knights, led by Kieron Pollard, won by nine wickets. For TKR, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein was the most successful with three wickets. Khary Pierre got two wickets as well. Narine was frugal as he gave away only 13 runs in his four overs.
The run-chase didn’t start on a happy note for TKR as Mujeeb cleaned up Narine in the second over. But then, Lendl Simmons (54) and Tion Webster (44) put on 97 for the second wicket. In the end, the Knights Riders won the game with as many as five overs to spare.
