Jamaica Tallawahs made a winning start to the CPL 2020 as they got the better of St Lucia Zouks on Wednesday morning. The St Lucia team raced to 50-run mark in only 5.4 overs but struggled to accelerate in the second half. Roston Chase scored 52 off 42 while the Zouks aggregated only 72 runs in the last ten overs to finish with 158/7. Glenn Phillips (44) and Rovman Powell (26) added 63 in only 5.2 overs after the Tallawahs scored only 13 runs in 4.1 overs. Despite the fall of wickets at one end, Asif Ali held on to take his team to a comfortable win with an unbeaten 27-ball 47.

Yet another sad start for St Lucia:
6/8 – The St Lucia franchise lost their first match of a CPL season on six occasions now. Their opening game of the 2015 edition against Trinidad franchise ended without a result but began the 2016 season with a 6-wicket win over the team from Trinidad. They suffered defeats in their first match of 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
4-4 – Jamaica Tallawahs have won and lost their first match of a CPL season in alternative years i.e. won their first match in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020 and lost in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
CPL’s milestone six:
3000 – The six hit by Rovman Powell in the bowling of Zahir Khan during Jamaica’s 8th over was the 3000th six recorded in the history of Caribbean Premier League.
It was the 570th six recorded in the league history of the Jamaica Tallawahs. Trinbago Knight Riders also struck 570 CPL sixes including nine maximums in the opening match on Monday. However, Tallawahs went past TKR by hitting three more maximums.
Russell’s slowest CPL innings:
94.12 – Andre Russell’s strike rate of 94.12 in this match is his lowest in CPL matches where he faced 10 or more balls. Before this season, Russell played 10+ balls in a CPL innings on 26 instances but never recorded strike rate less than 100. Russell’s previous lowest was 106.67 during the 2016 season game against SKN Patriots where he scored 16 off 15 balls.
Mujeeb gets Nabi:
2 – Only the 2nd time Mujeeb Ur Rahman has got the better of Mohammad Nabi in the Twenty20 format. The senior all-rounder got bowled in the bowling of Mujeeb during the 2019-20 BPL. Nabi has had an upper hand against the young spinner as he aggregated 76 runs from only 38 balls he faced which came with help of two fours and seven sixes.
Chase finally gets out:
104 – Roston Chase has been dismissed for the first time in a CPL match after scoring 104 runs. He featured in three matches during the 2018 edition where he scored 52 runs without getting out – 0*, 38* and 14*.
