The 2019 World Cup came to an end in the most dramatic possibility when England and New Zealand clashed off in the final at the Lord’s. Both the teams ended up scoring exactly 241 and later in the Super Over which was played as a tiebreaker to decide the winner. This was the first time in the ODI history that a Super Over was played after a tie. Interestingly, both the teams ended up scoring 15 runs apiece in the one-over eliminator but England edged out as they had scored more boundaries.
A Tied Super Over in a World Cup final is once in a century or a once in a generation event. At an average, One-Day Internationals witness a tie every 100 matches and none of the 11 Super Overs in the T20I format to date ended with equal scores. In fact, there have been over 200 completed ODI tournament finals but only three of those ended with a tie. The talk about the rules intensified after the game as New Zealand technically fell short of the title by ‘0’ runs. And such reoccurrence is highly unlikely in the near future.
Talking about this World Cup, Rohit Sharma caught everyone’s eye with five centuries in the tournament; the most by any player in a World Cup. The Indian opener was set to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs scored in a World Cup. Rohit was 27 runs shy of the record at the end of the league phase. However, he got out for just one run in the semi-final and their batting collapsed during the chase against New Zealand. The Indian vice-captain never got another chance to better the big record.
Shakib Al Hasan put on great effort with the bat as he was one of the three players to score over 600 runs in this tournament. He even took 11 wickets with his left-arm slow bowling including a 5-wicket haul. His performances were lauded across the globe but weren’t enough to take Bangladesh to the next round. Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi came to the party towards the end with a 4-wicket haul and 6-wicket haul in the last two games. No teenager before him even took a 4-fer in the World Cup.
