Australia is currently gearing up for the boxing day Test match against New Zealand. However, they have been met with a major blow as David Warner was struck with a thumb injury during the practice session ahead of the highly-anticipated game. Hosts Australia are currently ahead in the three-match Test series against Kiwis by 1-0.
David Warner, the left-handed Aussie opener has been in scintillating form with the bat. After a woeful Ashes 2019, he has certainly regained his form in the longer format. In the recently concluded two-match Test series against Pakistan, Warner mustered 489 runs at an average with one 150 plus score and a magical triple century. However, in the series opener against New Zealand, he got off to a good start but failed to convert into a big knock and scored 43 and 19 runs in two innings respectively.
A question mark on David Warner’s injury?
The Aussie opener was stuck with a ball in his thumb while batting in the nets as he was taking throw-downs from Australian assistant coach Graeme Hick. As soon as Warner was hit on his thumb, he threw his bat and was struggled to remove his gloves. He was left with pain and was soon attended by team doctor Richard Saw in the team’s changing room.
Later on, when Warner returned to the nets, he took light throwdowns from bowling coach Troy Cooley. But, the stress of the pain was clearly visible on his face and was struggling to hold his bat perfectly due to sore thumb. And, it looks like the team-management will monitor his injury closely before going into the 2nd Test match of the series scheduled to be held on 26th of December at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne.
Warner might turn out to be the second player to have met with an injury after pacer Josh Hazlewood. In reference to that, if the Aussie opener is not perfectly fit for the boxing day Test, then the top runners to replace him in the playing XI are Marcus Harris or Cameron Bancroft. After the first Test, now the hosts would be eager to seal the 2nd Test in order to take the series-winning lead against Kiwis.
