Delhi Capitals will be looking to go one step better in IPL 2021 after making it to the final of the tournament for the first time last year. The Shreyas Iyer-led side had a season to remember in the previous edition. They bagged 16 points from 14 matches in the league stage and finished second to make it to the playoffs.
They, however, failed to clinch their maiden IPL title as they lost to defending champions Mumbai Indians, the most successful team in the history of IPL. Delhi Capitals will be keen to build on their success last year and have further bolstered their squad by buying some new players in the recently-concluded IPL auction.
Prior to the auction, they had retained 17 players including 5 overseas stars. As expected, they retained all the big names including the misfiring stars like Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane. At the same time, they released six players – Mohit Sharma, Tushar Deshpande, Keemo Paul, Sandeep Lamichhane, Alex Carey, Jason Roy.
New additions and the full squad
Delhi Capitals went into the auction with a total of eight vacancies and a purse of Rs 13.4 crore. They started by buying Australia star Steve Smith for Rs 2.2 crore. Smith’s addition will give the Delhi squad some much-needed experience as well as leadership. The Delhi-based franchise’s next signing was India pacer, Umesh Yadav, for Rs 1 crore.
In the absence of Ishant Sharma, Delhi had struggled to find a good third pacer for the side and Umesh could solve that problem for the team. Delhi’s most expensive signing in the auction was Tom Curran as they shelled out Rs 5.25 crore for the England all-rounder. Curran’s addition will further strengthen Delhi’s all-rounders’ department which already boasts the likes of Marcus Stoinis, Chris Woakes, and Axar Patel.
Their last signing was England batsman Sam Billings for his base price of Rs 2 crore. It was a much-needed signing for Delhi as they needed a back-up wicketkeeper after releasing Alex Carey. The other signings were – Ripal Patel (INR 20 L), Vishnu Vinod (INR 20 L), Lukman Meriwala (INR 20 L), and M Siddarth (INR 20 L).
