Ambati Rayudu has had a rollercoaster 2019. After not being picked in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, he criticized the selection of Vijay Shankar by supposedly referring to him as a ‘3D player’. In July, he announced his retirement from all forms of the game after being named in the reserves for the Indian cricket team.
He wasn’t picked in the later stages of the mega event despite being a part of the standby list. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Shankar got injured during the World Cup but selectors didn’t go for Rayudu as a replacement. However, a couple of months later Rayudu had made a sudden U-turn on his retirement.
In a letter to the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), Rayudu had said, “I would like to come out of retirement and play cricket in all formats. I want to thank CSK, VVS Laxman and Noel David who have been very supportive during the tough time and are instrumental in making me realize that I have enough cricket left in me and the decision to retire was taken in an emotional state and in haste.”
A week to this, the star sensation opens about whether ‘3D’ tweet played a part in his exclusion from the World Cup squad. The 33-year-old was asked whether he has some regrets for the ‘famous’ tweet, Rayudu said as quoted by Cricbuzz, “Not at all. If it comes down to such things…I don’t know how to put it, but I don’t think that would’ve played any part. And if it did, I can’t imagine what cricketers must be going through honestly.”
‘I was very disappointed’
Rayudu was not included in the team as a replacement despite two players sustaining injuries. First, Rishabh Pant was named as a replacement for injured Shikhar Dhawan and then Mayank Agarwal was called in to replace Vijay Shankar, who was ruled out of the World Cup due to toe injury. The middle-order batsman had not cited any specific reason for the shocking decision to put an end to his international career.
While opening up on this, he said, “I was very disappointed. I mean, anyone would be because I had worked so hard for it. I was very prepared for that specific role at No. 4, but maybe their idea of No. 4 might have changed all of a sudden. Maybe they just wanted something else…I’m not too sure.”
Further, Rayudu even admitted that social media never interested him and likes to stay simple. The Indian batsman said that his love for the sport is what makes him enjoy his time on the ground and the glamour with the game doesn’t interest him.
