The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has come under a lot of fire of late. There have been several controversial decisions that were made in the recent past. Also, their decision to change the captain of the team right before the World Cup 2019 backfired. Gulbadin Naib, who took charge from Asghar Afghan, failed to impress with his leadership. The team failed miserably in the 50-over tournament leading to a massive embarrassment.
Thus, this move clearly invited a lot of criticism from the fans. Many blamed the poor leadership of the ACB for the failure in the tournament. Then, as a corrective measure, the board named Rashid Khan as the leader of the side across all the three formats. Now, their decision to postpone the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) hasn’t been received well yet again. The fans expressed their resentment this time in a much stronger way. Dozens gathered in front of the main office. They protested by displaying placards.
Fans disappointed with the ACB postponing the second edition of APL
Citing commercial and payment issues, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) decided to postpone the second edition of the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) recently. Furthermore, the board scrapped the league’s sanction and commercial agreement with Snixer Sports. It was stated that they failed to pay the complete right fees.
“The failure by Snixer Sports to pay the complete rights fees of the first edition as per the fees and payment schedule of the agreement and concerns about risks for integrity of the league posed by people connected to Snixer Sports are the reasons for termination that form material breaches of the agreement,” the ACB stated in its official statement.
The first edition of the APL was quite a success and was held in the UAE last year in October. The inaugural edition of the league featured stars from all across the globe. The likes of Chris Gayle and Shahid Afridi took part in the tournament. Hence, there were great expectations of the second edition of the league as well. However, the fans have got to wait for a longer period of time now.
“Dozens went to the street of Kabul. And demonstrated against the current leadership of #ACB through their main office gate,” a reporter tweeted.
