Team India’s journey in the ICC World Cup 2019 came to a bitter end as they lost to New Zealand in the first semi-final at Old Trafford, Manchester, by 18 runs. Kane Williamson’s side overcame the late onslaught by Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni to keep maintain their composure in the crunch moments and reached their second consecutive finals, while India was left to rue the chances they missed.
The Men in Blue could never recover once they were reduced to 5/3 inside 5 overs as Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli went back to the pavilion for 1-run each. Though Jadeja’s 77 and Dhoni’s 50 and their 116-run partnership kept India in the hunt until the last few overs, Dhoni’s run out in the penultimate over brought down the curtains on Team India’s chances. It was not the way Dhoni would’ve wanted in his 350th ODI match and his last World Cup appearance to turn out.
Bravo says he can understand why journalists question Dhoni
After their amazing win over title favourites, Kiwi captain Kane Williamson attended the press conference and praised the innings played by MS Dhoni. When he was asked if he would pick Dhoni in his team, Williamson quipped, “He is not eligible to play for New Zealand. Is he looking to change nationalities? Because we will consider that selection if we have to!”
He went onto emphasize on Dhoni’s experience and how he contributes to the team apart from his bat and gloves. “Yeah, his experience at his level and in these occasions is so important and his contribution today and yesterday, but throughout this campaign, it was extremely, extremely important.”
His sentiments about the former India captain were echoed by Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings’ teammate Dwayne Bravo. When Bravo saw an Instagram post with the question popped at Williamson, he commented on the same and mentioned that he doesn’t understand why journalists always question his performance or his place in the team.
He further said that people should enjoy one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He also added that we are lucky and blessed to be living in the same generation as him and got to see him play.
