Ed Joyce is one of the popular names that is associated with Ireland cricket when it was in its early days. He has played for 78 ODIs for Ireland and scored 2622 runs at an average of 38. He retired from cricket in May 2018. The 40-year-old former Irish batsman has been involved in coaching setup and in the performance pathway of men’s and women’s cricket in the country. After the earlier head coach of Women’s team, Aaron Hamilton stepped down, Joyce was named the temporary coach of the team.
After Ed Joyce’s appointment at the helm, Ireland women missed a close chance to qualify for the T20 World Cup recently. He worked hard with the team that enhanced their performance in the last 3 months. Now, Ireland Cricket has appointed their former top-order batsman as their coach on a permanent deal for 2 years.
On getting a permanent contract from the board, Ed Joyce was quite happy and is ready to take up the responsibility, “The part-time contracts introduced this year, the rise in profile of women’s cricket and women’s sport in general, and the investment in facilities and support structures around the senior team all point to a commitment from Cricket Ireland to grow the game and lift our standards to compete on the world stage,” he was quoted as saying by BBC.
Cricket Ireland impressed with Ed Joyce
Cricket Ireland’s performance director Richard Holdsworth was impressed with the improvement in the Ireland women’s game and as the home season has ended, they now need to focus on the World qualifiers, which will take place in Sri Lanka in 2020.
“With the home season coming to an end, and the qualifier completed, Ed will now have the opportunity to further develop the skillset and mindset of the wider squad, and start to focus on 50-over cricket ahead of the World Cup Qualifier in Sri Lanka next July.” Richard Holdsworth said as quoted by BBC.
Ed Joyce looked disappointed on missing out on qualification for the T20 World Cup but looks happy with the commission of the young and experienced players in the team. He along with his staff will now work on an individual game plan for every player, which will help them in giving better results in the near future.
