Former Indian all-rounder, Robin Singh has been appointed as the new director of cricket of the United Arab Emirates. A local media report states that the Emirates Cricket Board elected the Trinidad-born Indian player as their new director after sacking Dougie Brown who had held this position for 3 years.
Robin Singh had made his international debut for India in the year 1989. He played one Test and 136 ODIs for the nation before his career came to end in 2001. Robin had been playing cricket since his school days and he even captained the Trinidad Youth Team during the early stages of his career.
After his retirement from cricket, Singh took over the role of coaching and he joined the backroom staff of the most successful Indian Premier League franchise, Mumbai Indians in 2010. The Indian player had earlier served as the coach of Deccan Chargers while in 2013, he associated himself with the Caribbean Premier League franchise, Barbados Tridents.
Robin Singh will have to build a fresh team
Singh is known to be the pioneer of raising the fielding levels in the Indian cricket team. He even captained Tamil Nadu and South Zone at the domestic level. This shows that he has an immense amount of experience and the 56-year-old has the vision to take the U.A.E. Cricket team to newer heights.
The Emirates cricket team had qualified for the Cricket World Cup in 2015 however, it could not make it to the global event four years later. The nation is still rising in the cricket world as it is yet to match the success that several Asian teams have achieved. In the recently concluded U19 World Cup, U.A.E. could not make much impact as they took the 14th position finishing just ahead of Japan and Nigeria.
U.A.E. Cricket witnessed a dip after their main players were caught in a fixing scandal. Hence, the board had disbanded the selection panel. The team’s captain Mohammed Naveed was also involved in the controversy.
Robin Singh will have to build a fresh team and instill confidence in the new players. The Indian player will target the upcoming T20 World Cups as a good performance at the global events can improve the future of cricket in the Middle East nation.
