England club cricketer Chris Holliday scored a massive 316 off a mere 113 balls, helping his team, Hoylandswaine beat the Denby Cricket Club by 378 runs. The batsman smashed as many as 21 fours and 34 sixes en route the triple century. He, along with SP Singh, who scored 62 off 46 with seven fours and two sixes, took the opposition bowling to the absolute cleaners.
The match has been a part of the Huddersfield Cricket League where seven groups were created. The first six groups were created according to their position in 2019 while the seventh one was created out of lack of availability of grounds due to the coronavirus pandemic.
I did offer to retire but my team: Chris Holliday
It goes without saying that Holliday’s knock was incredible. But to the surprise of many, he has gotten a severe amount of criticism on the social media. The netizens reckoned that he should have retired after getting those many runs, but Holliday said that he was asked to carry on.
“I did offer to retire but my team told me to keep going. When I got past 200 someone from the boundary kept saying just 80 more runs for the record. I had no idea; it wasn’t even in my mind,” Holliday was quoted as saying to the media at the ground, reported by DNA.
Denby also had themselves to blame when they had dropped Holliday on 110 and he went on to hammer them severely. Cricket in England came to a halt during the coronavirus outbreak. Back in July, the sport made its return with the three-match Test series against the West Indies.
The England national team is currently playing the three-match Test series against Pakistan. After the red-ball matches, the two sides will be taking part in three T20Is. In between, the Brits, led by Eoin Morgan, also played three ODIs against Andre Balbirnie’s Ireland earlier this month.
As far as Holliday’s knock is concerned, it’s a freakish one, especially when one takes into account AB de Villiers’ fastest ODI century and Chris Gayle’s 175 against Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League (IPL), representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
