Faf du Plessis, the veteran South Africa cricketer, has put forth a suggestion, using which the T20 World Cup in Australia might take place. As per the Protea, the teams could stay in isolation for two weeks prior to the start of the mega event. The 35-year-old also said that after the tournament finishes, the sides should go for another two-week isolation period.
The World Cup, which is scheduled to take place later this year in October-November, has come under the clouds due to the massive coronavirus outbreak. However, he admitted that the travelling issues could turn detrimental. The Pretoria-born Du Plessis put forth his views during a live Facebook chat with Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal.
Faf du Plessis opens up
“I am not sure… reading that travelling is going to be an issue for lot of countries and they are talking about December or January. Even if Australia is not affected like other countries, to get people from Bangladesh, South Africa or India where there is more danger, obviously it’s a health risk to them,” du Plessis was quoted as saying during the chat.
“But you can go in before the tournament (for) two weeks isolation and then play the tournament and afterwards two weeks isolation,” he stated.
He also added a bit of humour, saying that it’s not possible to go to Australia via boats due to the travel restrictions in South Africa. “But I don’t know when South Africa will open their travel ban because we can’t go there like old days on boats,” Faf added.
At the present point in time, over 4.35 million people have been affected, globally, due to the COVID-19 pandemic with around 2,97,000 persons losing their lives. The United States remains to be the most affected until now with the death tolls more than 84,760. In South Africa, the ungodly virus has consumed the lives of 219 with nearly 12,100 confirmed cases.
As far as Faf is concerned, he has had a tough time off late. After the Proteas’ defeat in the Test series against England, he gave up captaincy. Prior to that, he lost the T20I and ODI leadership to Quinton de Kock.
