The outbreak of the coronavirus and the timing of the spread of the global pandemic has affected BCCI a lot. IPL was supposed to begin on March 29 but got postponed until April 15. But with the country going down into a 21-day lockdown, the fate of the 13th season of the IPL is under the cloud of uncertainty at this moment.
There were chances that the IPL franchises will meet the BCCI officials and decide the fate of the IPL. However, a fresh report has stated that the meeting will only occur after the government gives an advisory meeting on April 14. This is because the happening and scheduling of the IPL are completely dependent on the lockdown and the rules laid down by the government.
It is apparent that franchises are not meeting with the BCCI and taking that time in deciding the future of the tournament. One of the officials of a franchise recently spoke in an interview, where he said that the decision or even the meeting between the franchise and the board will take place after April 14.
There’s also a possibility of IPL getting shifted to October or November
“We last met the BCCI officials at the HQ and after that, the next meeting was called off as it was clear that clarity from the government on the situation with regards to the pandemic is a must. Now that our 21-day lockdown comes to an end on April 14, we will get clarity on how things stand and if we will need any further steps in that direction to fight COVID-19. Once that clarity is got, we can all sit down and chalk out the road ahead. The owners will meet only after the fresh advisory comes,” the official said as quoted by Sportstar.
The official further stated that there could be a possibility of an IPL tournament in October or November of later this year. It seems the official believes that the situation in India will get better earlier than other countries.
“Why do you think the October-November window is being looked at? It is because we want a full IPL with foreign stars. Even if the international border lockdown stays for six months, the foreign players would be free to come down by then. Yes, every franchise is free to voice their opinion, but let me tell you that would be the last option as a lot of the grandeur that comes with the IPL will then be lost,” the official said.
