338 Players available. 62 players sold. 64 players unsold. 212 players’ name didn’t even come up. This is how the IPL 2020 auction can be summed up in a nut-shell. It was yet another glittering event where the overseas players ruled the roost with Pat Cummins being the most expensive player. He also became the second most expensive ever in the IPL auction history.
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) entered into the bidding war late after his price crossed the Rs 14 crore mark and managed to secure Cummins’ services for a whopping amount of Rs 15.5 crore. Other decent picks from the team were Eoin Morgan and Chris Green while Tom Banton was a steal deal for the Dinesh Karthik-led side. Overall, they now have 23 players in the squad and are left with Rs 8.5 crore.
Glenn Maxwell was the next one to spark a lot of bids among the teams and the Kings XI Punjab splurged Rs 10.75 crore for him. Another big pick from them was of Sheldon Cottrell who was bought for a very good amount of Rs 8.5 crore. James Neesham and Chris Jordan were the other bargain buys for the franchise as the KXIP completed their quota of 25 players in the squads and were still left with Rs 16.5 crore in their purse.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) surprised everyone by going all-out for Chris Morris. They literally spent Rs 10 crore on the all-rounder and then snapped up Australia’s T20 skipper Aaron Finch. Late in the event, they also bagged Isuru Udana and Dale Steyn smartly when not many teams were interested in the proceedings. Rather the last few picks which also included young and exciting Joshua Phillipe saved the day for the Virat Kohli-led side.
CSK bought least players but surprised many
The Chennai Super Kings’ squad was almost settled coming into the auction and they were quite for the most parts of the auction which wasn’t surprising. However, when they raised the baton to bid, many were left stunned. They shelled out Rs 6.75 crore for Piyush Chawla after already spending Rs 5.5 crore for Sam Curran. They also picked Josh Hazlewood who last played in any T20 game back in March 2016.
The Delhi Capitals (DC) also fared well at the auction buying the likes of Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Roy, Alex Carey and Marcus Stoinis among the eight players they picked. The Rajasthan Royals focussed a lot on strengthening their bowling attack while also got hold of young Yashasvi Jaiswal winning the bidding war against the Mumbai Indians (MI).
The four-time champions Mumbai Indians picked only six players in the auction spending most of their purse on Nathan Coulter-Nile. Chris Lynn was another big pick from them and then the franchise concentrated on Indian uncapped players. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were calculative in their approach during the whole event and they didn’t go after any of the top players.
The Orange Army added the likes of Priyam Garg, Virat Singh and Mitchell Marsh among four other players to their squad for the upcoming IPL season.
