The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) led by Kapil Dev and with the guidance of Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy met on Friday to select India’s next head coach. Six applicants put their names forward for the job including the current head coach Ravi Shastri. However, Windies’ Phil Simmons pulled out of the selection process at the last moment due to personal reasons.
To select the right person for the job, the CAC spent several hours to accommodate the different time zones from where the applicants gave their presentations. The focal area of these presentations was the plan of how they’d like to take Indian cricket forward. In the end, it was decided that Ravi Shastri was the right man for the job. He had an edge over the other applicants as he was with the team for over two years now. Five parameters were given to the CAC to make a decision.
Each applicant rated out of 100
There were four categories in which the three members of the CAC could mark each of the applicants. They were Very Good (20), Good (15), Average (10) and Poor (05). In each of the five parameters, the CAC members had to tick one of these four categories. These five parameters are as follows:
- Coaching Philosophy
- Experience of coaching
- Achievements in coaching
- Knowledge of modern coaching tools

As revealed during the media session after the announcement of the head coach, the competition was quite intense. It was mentioned that there was only a marginal difference between the five candidates. It seems Ravi Shastri scored more than anyone else and thus will continue in the role till the end of T20 World Cup 2021. Mike Hesson and Tom Moody came second and third in the race.
Moreover, in the next two years, Ravi Shastri has got quite a task on his head. India will be playing two T20 World Cups in 2020 and 2021. Furthermore, they’ll play four Tests in Australia and ten against England (5 at home and 5 away). Since he is already under fire after the World Cup 2019 loss, Ravi Shastri has got a point to prove and he has got to justify his selection.
